Lupus and Aromatherapy

Lupus and Aromatherapy article by Aromawellness

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system (autoantibodies) attacks its own healthy tissue leading to tissue damage and inflammation throughout the body, including the skin, joints, brain, lungs, heart, blood cells and kidneys.

According to WebMD, there are two types of lupus; first one is called Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), which primarily affects skin and the second is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is a more serious type that affects every other part of the body, potentially affect major organs, such as the kidneys or brain.

Some people with lupus are able to lead very normal life, while others deal with severe unpredictable “flare-ups”, symptoms that at times can be debilitating. Common signs and symptoms of lupus include; chronic fatigue, weakness, headaches, joint pain, muscle aches, insomnia, GI issues, depression-anxiety, and skin rashes. According to the Lupus Research Institute, as of 2014, there is no known cure for lupus; however, a number of conventional medicines are available to ease the symptoms that include; corticosteroids, antimalarial drugs, pain relievers, thyroid medications, and immune suppressants.

Fortunately, there are some Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) remedies for lupus, that includes; Aromatherapy, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, herbal supplements, chiropractic care, traditional Chinese medicine, exercise-yoga-meditation, and a healthy diet high in anti-inflammatory food, that can help manage symptoms and improve overall immune function, without raising the risk for complications.

Essential oils for lupus include: Frankincense (effective at reducing inflammation and stops immune reaction associated with Lupus), Helichrysum (supports the nervous system and can help reverse autoimmune reactions), Lavender and Geranium (used to treat skin inflammation, sleeping, relaxing, soothing itchy skin rashes), and Ginger (used for digestive issues and inflammation), Myrrh, Basil (for inflammation and ease pain).
Can use these oils individually or in combination in a blend to; apply topically, massage, baths, steam inhalation, vaporizer
