Aromatic Reed Diffuser

Do you know…….Reed Diffuser is an elegant way to aromatize any room with light, subtle aroma. Homemade Aromatherapy reed diffuser is also an easy and cost effective excellent holiday gift or a birthday gift, or a house warming gift, or a gift for any other occasion. It can be customized according to season, occasion, personal scent preference. So get creative and have fun.

              Aromatic Reed Diffuser

Peaceful Aromatic Diffuser Blend

8 drops Bergamot Essential Oil

6 drops Frankincense Essential Oil

6 drops Palmarosa Essential Oil

4 drops Geranium Essential Oil

¼ cup Carrier Oil or Distilled Water

2 Tbsp Alcohol (Vodka or Rubbing Alcohol)

Method

Add 1/4 cup of lighter carrier oil (Apricot Seed or Safflower or Sweet Almond) or distilled water (or can use Dipropylene glycol, but I don’t like using it) to a glass measuring cup, add above essential oils (or your desired Essential Oils), add 2Tbsp of alcohol, stir the mixture well with a reed stick and pour it in a narrow neck glass bottle or jar.

Add the rattan reeds to the bottle so that the ends are submerged fully in the oil. Rattan reeds can be cut to desired length if needed. Turn the reeds upside down every few days or at least once a week to get the most aroma from the mixture.

Once a month can top up with more essential oils, depending how well they last – base essential oils tend to last much longer than top notes.

If the liquid mixture starts to look or smell unpleasant, dump it out, wash the jar, and make a new batch.

Aromatherapy and Bursitis Pain

Do you know……… The difference between Bursitis vs. Arthritis?  According to the American College of

                Aromatherapy for Bursitis Pain

Rheumatology,  Bursitis, similar to tendonitis are usually the result of minor injuries or repetitive overuse of the soft tissue around muscles and bones, whereas arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is sometimes caused by an autoimmune disorder.

Bursitis is inflammation of fluid filled sacs called bursae. Bursae, are found throughout the entire body, present near the joints. The bursae are lined with cells that form the synovial membrane and secrete the synovial fluid. They cushion and lubricate the space between bones and connective tissues (joints, tendons and ligaments), and muscles to ensure smooth movement of joints. When inflamed, movement becomes difficult and even muscles become stiff.

Bursitis is generally caused by repetitive movement and excessive pressure at a particular joint. It commonly occurs in heel, knee, shoulder, elbows, hip, and foot too. Symptoms of Bursitis:

Pain in the affected region

Swelling, redness

Warm to the touch

Stiffness

Prominent pain while moving makes movement difficult

More pain during the early morning and night

Treatment for bursitis involves:

Rest the Affected Area and avoid aggravating exercises or activities

Use Ice to Control Swelling

Stretching and move the Area

Essential oils, with their powerful anti-inflammatory, analgesic, restorative therapeutic properties can have profound effect to control bursitis pain. Following Essential Oils can be applied diluted to the affected area in circular motion to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and pain:

Peppermint

Turmeric

Frankincense

Winter Green

Lemon grass

Marjoram

Helichrysum

Basil

Aromatherapy Phototoxicity

Do you know……… Photosensitization is the process in which ultraviolet (UV) radiation combines with a particular substance and causes chemical or biological changes.

      Essential Oil Toxicity

Since centuries, Essential Oils have been widely used for bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, antiparasitical, insecticidal, medicinal and cosmetic applications. Nowadays, more so in pharmaceutical, cleaning, cosmetic, agricultural and food industries. Because of the mode of extraction, mostly by distillation and cold pressed from aromatic plants, Essential Oils contain a variety of volatile molecules such as terpenes and terpenoids, phenol-derived aromatic components. Furocoumarins (most common ones are bergapten and oxypeucedanin), a special class of constituent that react when exposed to ultraviolet light and can cause photosensitization of the skin with inflammation, blistering, reddening or burning symptoms after topical application of a photosensitive essential oil. Therefore, when using a photosensitive essential oil topically, avoid sunlight for up to 12 hours after use, including tanning beds. For detailed safety information, please refer to Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Essential Oil Safety – Second Edition, 2014.

Some of the Essential Oils that may cause Phototoxic or Photosensitive Reactions:

Angelica Root

Bergamot

Bitter Orange

Cumin

Grapefruit

Lemon

Lime

Rue
