Aromatherapy to Alleviate Ankle Pain

Aromatherapy to Alleviate Ankle Pain
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS, FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE

Do you know…………. Ankle injuries can affect people of all ages. They are frequently caused by repetitive overuse,

                 Aromatherapy for Ankle Pain

weakness and instability in the ankle, twisting, obesity, poor posture during exercising – walking – running, and falling or diseases like arthritis, plantar fasciitis, or nerve damages in the feet and the surrounding areas. Such an injury may lead to inflammation, redness surrounding the injury, ankle and heel pain with inconvenience in walking. Minor injuries can be treated with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method at home for a sprained ankle or achy knee, or wrist after playing sports for next 24-72 hours to speed up healing. It’s common in the United States for individuals suffering from minor sickness and pain to use over the counter medicines to treat various ailments, but if pain or swelling gets worse and doesn’t go away, consult a doctor.

Ankle sprains are the result of overstretching ligaments, which connect bones in ankle joint. That is why when we get our ankle twisted during a fall or playing a sport, connective tissues - tendons and ligaments, get stretched past their normal lengths, and sustain micro tears, which is damage to cells in the tissues, there is often blood leaking from damaged capillaries into intracellular space that cause additional swelling, bruising, pain. As a result, there is a loss of blood flow to surrounding cells and blockage of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products moving in and out of those cells, which leads to cellular damage beyond the original injury.

Pain could be managed with Aromatherapy using Essential Oils. Essential oils are natural, concentrated, volatile, liquid extract of different parts of plants which has been used since centuries to cure variety of ailments. Essential oils possess property to penetrate cells quickly, improving circulation and providing oxygen to inflamed joints. There are several essential oils that can be used to relieve the pain, muscle tenderness, to reduce the inflammation while assisting the body in its healing process due to their anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and circulatory stimulating properties:

Birch, Frankincense, Lavender, German Chamomile, Cypress, Peppermint, Clove Bud, Helichrysum, Black Pepper, Ginger, Turmeric, Birch, Wintergreen

 Ankle-Muscle Pain Rub

1/4 Cup Shea Butter or Aloe Vera gel

1/4 Cup Coconut oil

20 drops Peppermint essential oil

15 drops Turmeric essential oil

10 drops Black Pepper essential oil

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

10 drops Lavender essential oil

7 drops Geranium essential oil

Warm up half cup water in a saucepan on medium heat. In a glass measuring cup combine Shea butter (if using Aloe gel, don’t have to melt it) and Coconut oil, place in the warm water and allow to melt. Remove from sauce pan and turn off heat, pour the mixture in a 6oz glass jar, allow to cool to room temperature, add essential oils, stir well to combine all ingredients, cover, label. Rub on affected area 2-3 times daily or as needed.

Essential Oil Massage Benefits

Essential Oil Massage Benefits
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS, FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE

Do you know……. Our body self-repairs throughout our life span, but the normal wear-tear is unavoidable with gradual aging process. To increase the strength and flexibility, one can incorporate the massage in their everyday living style. Massage is not only enjoyable, but is beneficial for the maintenance of physical, mental, and emotional health. Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating our skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Most people can benefit from massage. According to American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), there are twenty-five benefits of getting massage done, some of which are:

Relaxes tight muscles and improves mobility of joints

                Aromatherapy Massage

Improves posture and coordination

Improves insomnia

Increases circulation, relieves itchy-dry skin

Relieves stress, tension, anxiety

Increases Vitality and mental alertness

Relieves joint and arthritic pain

There are many different types of massage, which includes:

Swedish massage: is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize.

Deep massage: this massage technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

Sports massage: is similar to Swedish massage for people involved in sports activities.

Trigger point massage: focuses on areas of tight muscle because of injury and overuse.

Therapeutic massage: is supportive and restorative type of therapeutic massage using essential oil for healing. It is called Aromatherapy massage. It’s not a deep tissue massage and has a profound effect on mind and body.

Essential oils, the natural, concentrated, volatile, liquid extract of plants, possess different therapeutic properties that have been used since centuries to cure various ailments. Can choose 1 or more essential oils (24-30 drops to 2oz of carrier oil) for:

Muscle Relaxing and soothing: Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Chamomile

                 Aromatherapy Massage

Calming and balancing: Geranium, Clary sage, Frankincense

Romantic and sensual: Ylang ylang, Sweet Orange, Jasmine

Purifying and cleansing: Tea tree, Lavender, Neroli

Energizing and uplifting: Peppermint, Clary sage, Rosemary, Rose, Ylang ylang

Decongesting: Eucalyptus, Pine, Tea tree

Depending on what you are trying to achieve you can use essential oils in one or more ways below:

Full-body massage: This involves mixing and creating a blend of one or more essential oils to carrier oils. For example, a blend with peppermint oil might be created to relieve pain in deep tissue massage or adding lavender essential oil to a carrier oil can provide immense relaxation.

Head and scalp massage:  A scalp massage is excellent for rejuvenating blood circulation in the scalp and relieving tension. The medicinal properties of both carrier oils and essential oils will also help scalp conditions such as dryness, dandruff, itching and more.

Face massage: Rubbing a little carrier oil infused with an essential oil into the palms of your hands and cupping the face will provide an instant, soothing effect. Carrier oils such as Argan oil, Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, Almond oil are amazing for the face and skin.

Foot massage: A foot massage or rub is a great way to unwind and relax. Since feet have larger pores they absorb essential oils fairly quickly and it gets into the bloodstream faster.

Ear massage: Did you know there are over 200 acupuncture points on the ear? Stimulating these points can activate the respective organs restoring balance in the body. With a little essential oil blend, using both the thumb and index finger gently massage the earlobe using a small circular action.

Muscle Relaxing Massage Oil:

8 drops Clary sage Essential oil

8 drops Lavender Essential Oil

5 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

3 drops Chamomile Essential Oil

2 oz Olive or sweet Almond or Grapeseed carrier oil

Add these essential oils to a 2 oz glass bottle, pour 2oz of carrier oil, 6drs Vit E, cover the bottle, mix, label. Use as desired. Mix well before using for massage.

Absorption of Essential Oils into Our Body

Absorption of Essential Oils into Our Body
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS, FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE

Do you know……..Essential oils get absorbed in our body in three ways, either by: Inhalation, Topical application (through skin), and/or Ingestion. Researchers have proved that all essential oil components have molecular

                        Essential oil Absorption

weight under 500 Dalton (the standard measurement unit of atomic mass), so they penetrate through outer layer of our skin the epidermis with relative ease, make into the bloodstream and diffuse to various organs. Initially an essential oil goes to areas of high blood flow such as skeletal muscle, the liver, and kidneys. It may become absorbed into the fat tissue. However, it is thought that essential oil does not stay in circulation for a longer period. Eventually it is excreted through the kidneys in the urine, exhaled by the lungs, secreted through the skin, or passed through in the feces.

Essential oils can be applied topically through body massage or simple application on the affected part of the body. Skin (outer layer) —-> Skin (inner layer) —-> Capillaries —->Blood stream —-> Target organs —-> Cell receptors —> Metabolized and Excreted. There are several factors that affects the penetration of essential oils through the epidermis to blood vessels for systemic circulation. Every essential oil has different viscosity and properties, everyone’s skin and surroundings are different. Besides, different areas of the skin are more permeable than others, like the palms of hands, soles of feet, forehead, scalp, behind the ears, inside the wrists and armpits, which will be quicker to absorb oil compared to legs and abdomen area. Also, the combination of the right essential and carrier oils (less viscous Almond or Grape seed oil gets absorbed quicker than thicker oils such as Avocado or Olive oil) used to make dilution helps with the absorption of essential oils.

Inhalation is the easiest, effective, and inexpensive mode of essential oil administration that can be carried out anywhere at any time. When essential oils are inhaled, the molecules travel through the olfactory system into the limbic system of the brain i.e. through the nerve pathways from the sinuses to the limbic system’s central glands. Inhalation is especially helpful in alleviating emotional problems like stress, anxiety, depression, and respiratory problems as some essential oils can be directly transported to the lungs within no time.

The oral ingestion of essential oils is not common practice in the US, but in France and Europe it is more common under the observation of a trained Aromatherapists, or specially trained physicians, or pharmacists. Oral ingestion of essential oils is NOT recommended for the public because some essential oils can be toxic to the liver or kidneys, or could have estrogen properties, or could show potential drug interactions, or the beneficial chemical constitution could change during gastric processing. Therefore, it’s advisable to either educate yourself in essential oil practice or seek expert advice.

You must be thinking, why essential oils are considered as an alternative health care modality for holistic approach to our physical, mental, emotional, as well as spiritual wellbeing? Scientist have studied those essential oils, the natural, concentrated, liquid extract of plants, possess different therapeutic properties that have been used since centuries to cure various ailments. Essential oils could:

  • Balance Hormones
  • Elevate Moods
  • Improve Sleep Quality
  • Strengthen Immunity
  • Fight Infection, Heal Wounds
  • Promote Oral Health
  • Relieve Headaches and Migraines
  • Can be used as Deodorant, Toothpaste, Bath Salts, etc.
  • Improve Brain Function
  • Even Skin Tone
  • Ease Pain
  • Reduce Stress, Anxiety, and Calming
  • Revitalize and Detoxify

Quick Tips to De-Stress with Aromatherapy

Quick Tips to De-Stress with Aromatherapy
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS. FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Do you know…….. Stress is a state of physical, mental, emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances or day to day life inconveniences. Unfortunately, we are living in a stressful time essentially caused by several phenomena that are inherent to today’s society, including work performance, competition, finance, natural disasters, pandemic, war.

Stress is a normal human reaction and in fact, the human body is designed to experience stress and react to it to help our body adjust to new situations. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert, motivated (e.g. during an important test) and ready to avoid danger during a perceived threat with its built-in stress response, the ‘fight-or-flight response’. While vastly different, each stressful situation, whether life-threatening or simple inconvenience, release adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Adrenaline increases blood pressure and boosts energy supplies, while cortisol releases glucose into the bloodstream, and even altering the immune system. Stress becomes a problem when stressors continue without relief or periods of relaxation, which can cause some serious health risks, including:

  • Exhaustion, Insomnia
  • High blood-pressure

                  Essential Oil Spray for Stress

  • Depression, Increased anxiety
  • Panic attacks, sadness
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Hostility and rage
  • Aggressive and impulsive behavior
  • Muscle tension, aches-pains
  • Overeating or under eating
  • Tobacco, drug, or alcohol dependence and abuse

Which is why we need to work towards managing our stress and decluttering our life. Take a step back, and assess what is stressing you out? Then develop and explore stress management strategies:

  • Positive thinking which strengthens our focus and inner resolve.
  • Learning how to use empowering, encouraging self-dialogue that releases serotonin,    dopamine and allows opening the needed inner resources to be successful.
  • Effective communication, the most important life-skill, that connects us with others and helps in developing relationship.
  • Spending time with friends and loved ones.
  • Taking time out for hobbies for reading, writing, painting, music, etc.
  • Healthy diet and eating habit.
  • Getting regular physical activity and practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, tai chi, or massage

There are medications (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, and Ativan) to help deal with anxiety with side effects and safety concerns, such as the risk of addiction. Anti-anxiety medications are known tranquilizers that slows down the nervous system and creates a relaxing-calming effect. Use of Essential Oils through Aromatherapy is a safe effective holistic health care approach to alleviate stress. It can conjure memories both good and bad, excite us, soothe us, even promote good night sleep. Fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect our emotional state as our sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic system of brain that activates the hypothalamus. Hypothalamus is the hormone control center in brain that regulates the sex drive, energy levels, stress, and happiness. To reap the rewards of Aromatherapy, use Essential oils proactively with patience. Essential oils can be applied topically (diluted) over the wrists, feet, back of the neck or inhale directly or can be diffused, in combination with lifestyle modifications in diet and exercise. Essential Oils for Restoring Balance in Spring

Essential Oils for Restoring Balance in Spring
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS. FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Spring season is here now. We all survived long nights, frigid temperatures, drying indoor heat, cold-flu, and fading tan lines. Spring is the time for new growth, new beginning, fresh potential, and spring cleaning. It is ‘Kapha’ time of the year.

Spring

According to Ayurveda (Ayu=life, Veda=knowledge, is a comprehensive system of healing), universe is composed of 5 Elements:

Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth

These five elements combine to make three Doshas, that controls all the function of our mind and body:

Vata(Air and Ether) –Fall-Early Winter, Later life

Pitta(Water and Fire) –Summer, Adolesent-Middle age

          Kapha(Water and Earth) –Late winter-Early Spring,    Birth-Puberty

Three Doshas

Kapha is comprised of water and earth element. According to Ayurveda this dosha is slow, moist, cool, heavy, smooth and responsible for the stability, lubrication, and support of our physical body. Characters of a Kapha personality; have big eyes, smooth, dense skin, have exceptional endurance, robust, and strong, love to eat, enjoy stable partnership and love children, a loyal friend, warm, compassionate, have patience, easy going. Out of balance Kapha people could be lethargic, have food cravings, low metabolism, can gain weight easily, feeling of sadness, depression, congestion. To keep Kapha balanced, they should eat dry, warming, pungent, bitter flavored food that has stimulating properties, and stay away from sweet, sour, salty, oily foods, exercise daily, follow a yoga routine, keep a gratitude journal, go on outing with friends.

Together with consuming balanced healthy diet, exercising, Aromatherapy (an alternative healthcare modality) is another good and easy way of restoring balance of heavy, cold and wet nature of excess Kapha dosha and to achieve abundant health. Aromatherapy is a science and art of using Essential oils for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Aromatherapy Safety for Babies and Children

Aromatherapy Safety for Babies and Children
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS. FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Do you know………We avoid using Essential Oils on a newborn unless it is

            Aromatherapy Safety for Babies

utmost necessary that outweighs the potential risk. No matter the brand, quality Essential oils are used typically highly diluted for babies and young children (12 yrs and younger) as compared to use with adults to avoid redness or any adverse reactions, because newborns have very tender skin and organs.

Use 1-2 drops of essential oil to an ounce (30 ml) of a suitable carrier oil such as; coconut, olive, or almond oil following adequate dilution guidelines as follows (detailed in ‘Essential Oil Safety’ by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young):

AGE     Percentage        Max # Drops
infant – 2 yrs     0.1% – 0.2%       1 – 2 drops/oz of carrier oil
2 – 6 yrs     1% – 2%       9 – 24 drops/ oz of carrier oil
6 – 14 yrs     1.5% – 3+%      12 – 28 drops/ oz of carrier oil

Measurements/conversions (by volume)
30 ml= 1 fl oz = 600 drops = 2 Tbsp
5 ml = 1/6 fl oz = 100 drops = 1 tsp
1 ml = 1/30 fl oz=20 drops = 1/5tsp

Intermittently diffusing the oils in low level in baby’s room is an effective way to reap the benefit of Essential Oil molecules or apply appropriately diluted oil to the back, stomach, chest, or bottoms of the baby’s feet. Always test the diluted oil on yourself first and then on a very small-tiny area on baby to be sure their skin will tolerate the blend. Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils are all avoided in younger children (12 yrs and under) because they contain a chemical constituent called cineol 1,8 and menthol.
