Aromatherapy Safety for Babies and Children

Do you know………We avoid using Essential Oils on a newborn unless it is

            Aromatherapy Safety for Babies

utmost necessary that outweighs the potential risk. No matter the brand, quality Essential oils are used typically highly diluted for babies and young children (12 yrs and younger) as compared to use with adults to avoid redness or any adverse reactions, because newborns have very tender skin and organs.

Use 1-2 drops of essential oil to an ounce (30 ml) of a suitable carrier oil such as; coconut, olive, or almond oil following adequate dilution guidelines as follows (detailed in ‘Essential Oil Safety’ by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young):

AGE     Percentage        Max # Drops
infant – 2 yrs     0.1% – 0.2%       1 – 2 drops/oz of carrier oil
2 – 6 yrs     1% – 2%       9 – 24 drops/ oz of carrier oil
6 – 14 yrs     1.5% – 3+%      12 – 28 drops/ oz of carrier oil

Measurements/conversions (by volume)
30 ml= 1 fl oz = 600 drops = 2 Tbsp
5 ml = 1/6 fl oz = 100 drops = 1 tsp
1 ml = 1/30 fl oz=20 drops = 1/5tsp

Intermittently diffusing the oils in low level in baby’s room is an effective way to reap the benefit of Essential Oil molecules or apply appropriately diluted oil to the back, stomach, chest, or bottoms of the baby’s feet. Always test the diluted oil on yourself first and then on a very small-tiny area on baby to be sure their skin will tolerate the blend. Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils are all avoided in younger children (12 yrs and under) because they contain a chemical constituent called cineol 1,8 and menthol.

Inspiring Charlie Chaplin Quotes

Inspiring Charlie Chaplin Quotes
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Do you know……………I received Charlie Chaplin (an English comedic actor, filmmaker, composer, one of the most iconic figures in the film industry worldwide) quotes on WhatsApp. These are such inspirational and uplifting quotes, I wanted to share some with you:

  • A day without laughter is a day wasted.

                       Inspiring Life Lessons

  • Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles.
  • Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.
  • You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down
  • We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery.
  • Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself.
  • I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.
  • To help a friend in need is easy, but to give him your time is not always opportune.

Lessons to be learnt from his precious thoughts are:

Self-love and be authentic

           Charlie Chaplin Inspiring Quotes

Maturity, don’t stay stuck in your own boundaries

Respect every individual the way you would like to be treated

Self-confidence to achieve success without any wrong doings

Modesty, being true and honest to yourself

Simplicity, by your nature and thinking

Follow your heart and instinct. work towards betterment of self and society

Respect and understand the preciousness of life

For many it will feel redundant, still it’s good practice to periodically renew these ideas. It’s nice to have the love and respect for humanity as there is enough room for everyone in this world and our mother earth is large enough to accommodate all of us where we can live in harmony and succeed peacefully. Aromatherapy using Essential Oils is a good approach to stay grounded and fulfil our goals. Essential Oils are natural, volatile, concentrated extract of different parts of plants and contain therapeutic properties. It has been used since ancient times for healing, health care, beauty products, meditation, etc. Essential Oils promote health of body, peacefulness of mind, helps a person get in touch with their true selves. Essential oils can be used by diffusing, or as a room spray, or applying topically at pressure points. Most of the grounding oils come from trees, barks and resins, as it’s evident that trees are intrinsically grounded through their root structure into the earth, e.g. Birch, Cypress, Cedarwood, Vetivert, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli, Orange, etc.

Aromatherapy for Body Odor

Aromatherapy for Body Odor
A Lovely Monday Morning to You All!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Do you know…………… Body odor is the unpleasant smell our body gives off when natural skin bacteria breaks down sweat proteins into acids.

                                      Body Odor

It is also known as B.O., Bromhidrosis, Osmidrosis, or Ozochrotia. Some other causes of offensive body odor include poor hygiene, nutrient deficiencies, diet, medication, gastrointestinal problems like chronic constipation, and underlying medical problems, such as; genetic metabolic disorders, liver disease, or diabetes. Each person’s unique body odor can be used to identify people, especially by our pets, like dogs and other animals.

Sweating, in general, is the body’s natural way to regulate its temperature, but unpleasant body odor can affect our confidence and personality. Bacteria breakdown proteins in our sweat into two acids – propionic acid and isovaleric acid. Propionic acid is produced when Propionibacteria break down amino acids. It has a pungent smell and is often associated with vinegar, while Isovaleric acid, also found in many kinds of cheese, is produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Human body also has two types of sweat glands, Eccrine Glands: These glands are found throughout the body and produce sweat for maintaining our body temperature. Apocrine Glands(scent gland): These glands are found in our armpits, eyelids, genital area, breasts and are usually responsible for the foul odor produced by our body,

Body odor can be treated by practicing good hygiene and with over-the-counter medicines or Anti-perspirants or Deodorants. But lately, there has been a lot of debate surrounding the chemicals used in deodorants and their cumulative adverse effect on the human body. The safer, alternative, simple, and natural home remedies that help get rid of body odor by controlling the growth of bacteria and reducing excessive sweating, is the use of Essential Oils. Energy Booster

Energy Booster
A Lovely  Monday Morning to you all!

PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING.

Do you know………Scientific fact is, energy flows from higher state to lower state. At present we are in the middle of global Covid-19 pandemic that has impacted everyone. With new cases of the novel Corona virus being reported daily around the world, we are scared of the uncertainties, the fear factor is very high and the collective consciousness of the world is very low. We react to situations according to our mental condition not dependent upon the situation.

Energy Booster E. Oil

We have to learn how to use, how to sense, how to pick up on vibrational energy to our advantage and to manifest our best life? Where attention goes energy flows, where energy flows things grow. If we look at our body as a garden, so to grow, to uplift our spirits, to improve our focus-concentration, we have to be at a very high state of mind to maintain the original seven natural qualities of the soul; love, peace, purity power, knowledge, love, happiness, and bliss.

As a clinical Aromatherapist, I like to utilize the therapeutic properties of Essential Oils to improve energy levels naturally. Essential oils are great natural holistic approach to feel revitalized and energetic, leading to greater productivity. Of course, if you notice your friends or family member going through a serious depressive state, then immediately seek medical attention. Essential Oils are the natural, volatile, concentrated extract distilled from different parts of the plants, used holistically to alleviate several physical and emotional ailments. When Essential Oil(s) inhaled directly or applied topically, they can influence areas of the brain that control feelings of tiredness and stress, thus leaving us feeling more awake, focused, and confident. Researchers have studied that essential oils may affect a number of biological factors; including heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, immune function. and other causes of fatigue. Certain oils can actually provide an energy boost and a warming effect on the body caused by increased blood flow. Some of the following Essential Oils are used for boosting energy:

Citrus: Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Lime, Tangerine, Mandarin, Bergamot

Spicy: Black pepper, Cinnamon bark, Clove, Ginger

Bark: Frankincense

Minty: Peppermint, Wintergreen, Spearmint

Coniferous: White fir, Pine, Juniper berry, Spruce

Herbal: Rosemary, Sage, Tea tree, Thyme, Basil, Lemongrass

There are three ways we can use essential oils; direct inhalation, indirect inhalation, and topical application. For direct inhalation, simply add two drops of essential oil in your hand, rub them together, take 3-4 deep breath and you will,  instantaneously feel the response or can add essential oil to a cotton ball (or Kleenex) in a sandwich bag and inhale as required. For indirect inhalation, add few drops of essential oil(s) to a diffuser to help soothe, calm, uplift mood and energy levels in your surroundings. To apply topically, rub 1-2 drops of essential oil to your wrists, or below the feet or on the neck, or can dilute your desired essential oils with a carrier oil (Jojoba oil, Argan oil, Almond oil, Coconut oil) and use as a full body massage oil to balance nervous energy and promote positive energy.

Aromatic Reed Diffuser

Aromatic Reed Diffuser
A Lovely  Monday Morning to you all!

PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING.

Do you know…….Reed diffuser is an elegant way to aromatize any room without the use of heat or flame. Homemade Aromatherapy reed diffuser is very popular and is an excellent holiday gift that can be customized in many ways. So get creative and have fun.

With Corona pandemic and with new cases of the novel coronavirus being reported daily around the world, here is a simple DIY disinfecting reed diffuser recipe:

Disinfecting Aromatic Reed Diffuser

           Disinfecting Reed Diffuser

6 drops Bergamot Essential Oil

4 drops Lemon grass Essential Oil

4 drops Lavender Essential Oil

4 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

¼ Cup Apricot or Jojoba Carrier Oil

2 Tbsp Alcohol

Rattan Reeds and a glass jar with narrow neck

Add ¼ cup of Apricot Seed or Jojoba Carrier oil (or can use Dipropylene glycol, but I don’t like using it) to a glass measuring cup, now add 2Tbsp of alcohol (Vodka or rubbing alcohol), and above essential oils (or add 15-20drops of  your desired Essential Oils). Stir the mixture well with a reed stick and pour it in a narrow neck glass bottle or jar. Add the rattan reeds to the bottle so that the ends are submerged fully in the oil (Rattan reeds can be cut to desired length if needed). The reeds soak up the scent and emit a pleasant aroma in any room or office space.Turn the reeds upside down once in couple of weeks to get the most aroma from the mixture. Once a month can top up with more essential oils, depending on how much mixture is left. Base note essential oils tend to last much longer than top notes.

FYI: According to WHO (World Health Organization), Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. This virus is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. Most people who get COVID-19 have mild or moderate symptoms, cough, fever, difficulty breathing, can recover if seek medical care early. The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is being well informed about the cause and the spread of the disease. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently, Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, don’t touch your face with dirty hands, and maintaining social distancing of 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people. The current statistics is, more than 491,000 people have died from COVID-19, while more than 9.6 million confirmed cases in at least 188 countries and territories and more than 4.8 million people have recovered to date.

Emotional Detox with Aromatherapy

Do you know……….. It is terrifying to lose control of our emotions. We all go through some psychological problems of brain fog, depression, anxiety, tantrums, anger, etc., but we should not let it become a part of our daily routine. Emotional detox is the release of negative emotions and thoughts.

      Emotional Detox with Aromatherapy

If you have psychological issues, you likely have some sort of gut issue and vice-versa. Unfortunately, the brain and the gut are intimately linked. You must have heard or even used, ‘This is my ‘gut feeling’. Gut feeling is our body’s primal response to subconscious information. Most of us have experienced the sense of knowing things before we know them without any obvious explanation. The ultimate purpose of gut instinct is to protect us.

It’s important to heal the fatigue, gut and digestive symptoms; constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc., simply by managing eating habits, exercising, and healthy life style. Together with these important actions, practice yoga and meditation regularly, make a gratitude journal, spend time outside in nature, indulge in activities to deal with negative emotions, avoid depressive situations, and try to stay calm.

Toxic emotions which stem from negative beliefs and attitudinal patterns, need to be purged. Sometimes these waves of emotional detox intertwine with one another, that leave us feeling physically drained and exhausted. Emotional detox is hard, but it is important to continue healing our body. In today’s fast paced, electronic, toxin filled world, it’s safe to say that many of us are not grounded or only partially grounded. Grounding and being grounded is a term in aromatherapy used to mean connecting with the present, being in the now and physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and energetically rooted like a tree (The tree stands firmly rooted to the ground, reaches for sun energy, bears flowers-fruits, sways, and changes with the season). Being grounded can also mean having a clear vision of ourselves and keeping our reactive, ego-centric behaviors in check. Essential oils have been the most amazing natural remedy to help mitigate these toxic emotions and begin healing our mental health. Essential oils for grounding obtained from the barks, roots, needles and resin of aromatic plants, eg:

Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Myrrh, Patchouli, Black Spruce, Cypress, Angelica Root, Roman Chamomile, Ylang ylang, Rosewood

Inhaling the scent of certain oils can help to ground and stabilize the energies being detoxed from our emotional body.  Essential oil can be inhaled directly from the bottle or place a single drop in palm, rub hands together, cup around nose, and begin breathing deeply for a calming effect, or apply a drop on wrists and neck, or apply to the bottom of the feet, or diffuse, or can wear like perfume.

Grounding-Calming Blend:

5 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil

5 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

5 drops Bergamot Essential Oil

2 drops Vetiver Essential Oil

2 oz Grapeseed or Almond carrier oil

Combine Essential oils and Carrier oil into a 2 oz. dark glass dropper bottle, label, and mix well. Massage 3-5drops near tail bone and lower back daily at night before bed time to open up root chakra, which is a powerful tool to get grounded.

Note: if begin considering harming yourself or others, seek immediate medical attention.

Coconut Oil Use in Aromatherapy

Do you know………Coconut Oil is the do-everything natural cost effective oil that can be used for cooking, skin care, hair care, massage, aromatherapy, bio-fuel, as antimicrobial agent, etc. It’s easily available, affordable, and used by large majority of the population.

         Coconut Oil Use in Aromatherapy

Coconut oil is surging in popularity as a “health food,” after being discarded for a long time because of its high saturated fat content. Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants, and has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. When used on hair, it improves scalp health, supports hair growth and shine without the common harmful chemicals found in regular commercial products.

Coconut oil is made by pressing; fresh coconut meat called, ‘Wet Method-Cold Pressed’ without use of heat where the temperature remains below 120 degrees F; this is believed to help retain more nutrients and produces Virgin Coconut Oil or dried coconut meat (Copra) called, ‘Dry Method-Machine Pressed’, the oil is then steamed or heated to deodorize the oil and bleached by filtering through clay to remove impurities and any remaining bacteria. This process produces Refined Coconut Oil with higher smoke point at about 400-450 degrees F, is flavourless and odorless. The refined oil has no coconut taste or smell and is used for cooking, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical purposes. It’s called RBD coconut oil for “Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized”.

Coconut Oil contains 92% of saturated fatty acids in the form of triglycerides, most of it are medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) with lauric acid at 45-65%.  . MCFAs with chains of 6 to 12 carbon atoms (C6–C12) are not common to different vegetable oils, that makes coconut oil an excellent solvent for flavours, essences, emulsifiers, as carrier oil in Aromatherapy, etc. In contrast, saturated fats in animal fats and most other vegetable oils are mainly long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), which contain 14 to 18 carbon atoms (C14–C18). Studies have shown that molecular chain length greatly influences a fatty acid’s metabolic and physiologic properties. Triacylglycerides (TAGs) composed of MCFAs are more water-soluble, quickly absorbed, and readily digestible, than TAGs containing LCFAs.

Natural Face Wash with Coconut Oil:

25 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

15 drops Lavender Essential Oil (skin soothing properties)

8 drops Geranium Essential Oil (anti-aging properties)

1 (8oz) cup Coconut Oil

1 Tbsp baking soda

In an 8oz glass jar pour the melted Coconut Oil (can melt in a pan over slow flame), bring to room temperature, add Baking Soda, mix well, add Essential Oils, mix well, cover, label, store in a cool place. Use it everyday or as needed for face wash.
