Essential Oils for Sinus Congestion
A Lovely Monday Morning to you all!
PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING.
Do you know……..We have four pairs of hollow, air-filled cavities called sinuses, lined with soft, pink tissues called Mucosa. They are located over the eyes in the forehead called Frontal Sinuses, between the eyes called Ethmoid Sinuses, below the eyes behind the cheek bones called Maxillary Sinuses (is the largest), and near the center behind the nose called Sphenoid Sinuses. A thin wall, called the Septum, divides the nose. Most of the sinuses drain into the throat where it is swallowed or into the nose through a small channel or drainage pathway (middle meatus). Experts still don’t know what is the exact function of these sinuses? One theory is that they help humidify and warm the air we breathe in, another is that they allow our voices to resonate and enhance our voices.
At one point or other, we all have suffered from Sinus infection or Sinusitis, which is not a pleasant experience. Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinus tissue lining within the passages of the nose that can be caused by infection, allergies, and chemical or particulate irritation of the sinuses. This results into inflammation mucus build-up, runny nose, post nasal drip, congestion, pain, cough, sinus headache, fever, and fatigue. Sinus conditions:
Acute Sinusitis (sinus infection): Viruses, bacteria, or fungi infect the sinus cavity, causing inflammation. Common symptoms are; more mucus; nasal congestion; discomfort in the cheeks, forehead, or around the eyes, and headaches. It lasts for a short time, defined by the American Academy of Otolaryngology as less than four weeks and is usually a part of a cold or other respiratory illness..
Chronic Sinusitis (chronic rhinosinusitis): Chronic sinusitis occurs when the spaces inside nose and head (sinuses) are swollen and inflamed for three months or longer, despite treatment. It is more than just a series of infections, chronic sinusitis is a persistent process, mucus normally drains making nose stuffy and breathing through nose may be difficult, area around your eyes might feel swollen or tender.
Deviated Septum: If the septum that divides the nose is too far to one side, it can obstruct airflow in a nostril.
Hay fever (allergic rhinitis): Allergens like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander cause sinuses to overreact that results into mucus, nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and itching.
Nasal Polyps: Are small growths in the nasal cavity. They can happen due to inflammation from asthma, chronic sinus infections, and nasal allergies (such as hay fever).
The majority of sinus infections are result of cold or virus or bacteria, and Antibiotic, Decongestants, Nasal Steroid Spray, or Sinus surgery are a very common conventional treatments. Instead of running to the store or the doctor for an answer to your sinus problems, first try to heal sinus infections with Aromatherapy using essential oils and other natural ways. Essential oils are natural, concentrated, volatile, liquid extracts of different parts of plants with individual therapeutic properties. Essential oils have been used for centuries as a natural way to support mental, emotional and physical health. Can try these natural alternative, holistic treatments:
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and avoid consuming dairy, alcohol.
- Irrigate sinuses using a Neti-Pot with saline nasal water
- Use a diffuser with water and essential oils (Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Clary sage, or Lavender essential oils in any combination)
- Rub pressure points with a mix of essential oils(2drops each of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Peppermint Essential Oils in a carrier oil, like Almond or Grape seed Oil); side of each nostril, under the nose in the midline, on the temples, across the forehead.
- Direct inhalation of essential oils; right from the bottle or add 2-3 drops of oils to a handkerchief, cotton ball, or inhaler tube, and breathe in as needed.
- Steam Inhalation: is a very effective way to relieve stuffy nose. Boil 2-3 cups tap water and pour into a heat-proof bowl. Add 4-6 drops of essential oils (2 drops each of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and 1 drop Peppermint Essential Oils) and stir. Cover the back of your head with a towel, carefully lean over the bowl, and breathe in the steam through your nose and mouth as long as the steam is rising (for 2-4 minutes). Keep your eyes closed to prevent eye irritation. Repeat this once or twice a day for 2-3 days or as needed. (Instead of essential oils, can also use herbs: like 1 teaspoons of oregano and 1 teaspoons of basil).
