Yoga and Essential Oil Harmony

Do you know……..the United Nations (UN), declared June 21, as International Yoga Day in 2015, on the suggestion of India Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. Yoga is not a religion, it is a spiritual and ascetic discipline, a philosophy which originated in ancient India about 5000 years ago. Yoga includes a group of specific bodily postures, breath control, simple meditation that is practiced for health and relaxation. The word ‘Yoga’ derives from Sanskrit (an ancient language of India, still spoken) that means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of a person’s mind, body, and consciousness. Patanjali, is said to be the father of classical ashtanga yoga (the eight-limbed path), who wrote the Yoga Sutra, that also outlines eight limbs of yoga: Yamas (restraints), Niyamas (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharna (concentration), Dhyan (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption).

Yoga and Essential Oil Harmony

Yoga was first introduced to the Western world by Swami Vivekananda (was an Indian Hindu monk, a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa), more than a hundred years ago and is rapidly getting integrated into our public education, health care, and the workplace. There are several different styles of Yoga. Today, most people practicing yoga, do perform asanas, which is a program of physical postures that provide strength, endurance, improve circulation and energy flow, cleanse organs, and expand muscles, joints. Here are some practical benefits of Yoga, that people may experience:

Increased Flexibility and balance

Improved muscle strength and tone

Reduced Joint Pain

Increased Stamina and Body awareness

Reduced Stress, Relaxation, and better sleep

Strengthens Self-awareness

Encourages forgiveness

Aromatherapy and yoga are both ancient healing practices focused on physical, mental, and spiritual health. Aromatherapy is the art and science of using Essential Oils which are natural, volatile, concentrated extract of different parts of plants. Essential Oils are incorporated to enhance the practice of Yoga for their emotional and physical benefits. Based on their therapeutic properties, Essential Oils can be used in a diffuser, or by mixing several drops with water in a spray bottle, or by mixing with carrier oil for anointing students, with their permission, on the forehead, or cleanse and purify yoga classroom, as well as yoga mats. Some of the popular Essential Oils used during Yoga are:

Lavender: decreases stress and anxiety, calming, anti-inflammatory, for sore muscles, anti-bacterial

Frankincense: grounding, balancing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent,  boost cellular regeneration, strengthens the immune system, and stimulates the lymphatic system

Eucalyptus: anti-inflammatory, decongestant, disinfectant, antiseptic

Myrrh: for immune system, anti-infectious, antiviral

Peppermint: energizing

Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine: calming, cleansing, purifying

DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner:

12 drops Tea tree Essential Oil

8 drops Lavender Essential Oil

4 drops Bergamot or Lemon Essential Oil

1 Tbsp Vodka

2oz Distilled water

In a 2oz dark glass spray bottle, add essential oils, vodka, fill with distilled water, close the bottle, mix, and label. Mix well before each use.  Spray yoga mat after completing the yoga session and putting the mat away. Use as needed.

Yoga, Meditation, and Aromatherapy all support the well-being of our body, mind, and spirit. Here is a beautiful quote from The Bhagvad Gita,

“Yoga is the journey; of the Self, to the Self, through the Self.”

Aromatherapy Aid to Shingles

Do you know……… Shingles is the common name of Herpes zoster, is an outbreak of a painful, itchy rash or blisters on the skin that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, the Varicella-zoster virus. Shingles duration is most often between 3 to 5 weeks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 out of every 3 people in the United States, will develop shingles. People most at risk for developing shingles include those:

Older than 50 years of age

Under excessive stress

Have experienced major trauma

Recovered from recent sickness

Shingles can affect any portion of the body, including the eyes. However, it most commonly often presents as a band of blisters on one side of body, torso, neck or face. Be sure to keep the rash and blisters clean and dry, not to touch them especially, avoid popping or picking at them, keeping them covered as much as possible. The fluid from open blisters is infectious. Shingles is generally treated by medical intervention. Vaccines are available to older people (age 60 years and over), that can help to prevent the condition, though not entirely effective. Eating a diet high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants strengthens immune system enabling it to fight the shingles virus. Researchers have found that certain essential oils with antiviral, pain-relieving properties and can boost immune system, can help to alleviate pain and itchiness associated with shingles, though further studies are needed. Essential Oils are natural, volatile, concentrated extracts of different parts of plants and have been used since centuries to cure various ailments due to their different chemical (therapeutic) properties. The following essential oils may help: Peppermint, Capsaicin, Geranium, Thyme, Lemon, Oregano, Tea tree, Chamomile, Frankincense
