Amazing Aromatherapy

Do you know…………..The last week I was in Minneapolis, MN, for 2019 AIA (Alliance of International Aromatherapists) conference. I met several experts of this field, teachers, educators, colleagues, and attended several educational, informational presentations that empowered me being a Clinical Aromatherapist. Here are snippets of what we learnt as it’s not feasible to share the intricacies of the science of this healing modality in few minutes, which is not only aroma:

How to practice the art and science of this ancient culture of Aromatherapy within the scope of legal guidelines.

Aromatherapy is a part of Integrative Medicine like; Acupuncture, Chiropractor, Massage Therapy, Ayurveda, etc. that is used as a complementary, holistic approach to a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing in conjunction with conventional medicine. It takes into account, a complex interplay of person’s biological, behavioral, psychosocial and environmental influences. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The concept of holism dates back to ancient Vedic culture. “properties of a whole are not determined by those of its parts” (Healy, 2016, Patestos, Anuffuro, and Walker, 2019).

How to establish a working relationship with conventional medicine practitioners to recognize Aromatherapy as a holistic patient-centered approach for symptom management?

Introduce and educate people with the therapeutic importance of safe clinical, holistic use of Essential Oils for the benefit of their overall well-being, eg: nausea, pain management, sleep problem, infection, etc.

Happiness Fragrance

Do you know……….Our thoughts affect our feelings, our feelings affect our actions, and our actions determine our happiness. Behavioral scientists have observed, that optimistic people are emotionally and physically healthier and tend to be happier, have better moods, more persevering, and successful. They stay calm and stable amidst most pressure and crises. They consider life debacles as transient without blaming others, because our thoughts crea

te our world surrounding us. It sounds absurd, but with our own choice, we have made our habit to get disturbed with unfavorable situations. It simply means that what we think, do, and say affects who we become on the outside, the inside, and in our brain. Therefore, it means we can retrain our brain to be more positive, make our thoughts to become inspirational, and develop the sense of gratitude to:

Lead happy, rich, fulfilled life

Spend most time socializing and stay mentally sharp

Have good relationships

Have stronger immune systems with better health habits

Live longer, stress free than pessimists

To avoid falling into bad mood traps, blaming others, and having pessimistic,  negative thoughts, we can easily get out of them simply by practicing; Meditation, Exercise, Deep breathing, Better-healthier diet,

and Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the art and science of using Essential Oils to alleviate variety of ailments. Essential Oils are natural, volatile, concentrated liquid, extracted by distillation from different parts of plants and possess individual therapeutic properties. Following safety and precautions, use essential oils that are; energizing, uplifting, refreshing, enhance peace and happiness. Eg: Orange, Jasmine, Rose, Frankincense, Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Cinnamon, Orange, Neroli, Lavender, Petitgrain, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Ylang ylang, etc.

Researchers have revealed that Essential Oils can help improve person’s mood, by triggering the Limbic system of our brain. Everyone is different and reacts differently to the fragrance, therefore chose essential oil(s) that works best for you.

Happiness Diffuser Blend:

20 drops Lemon Essential Oil

20 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil

20 drops Frankincense Essential Oil

20 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

10 drops Ylang ylang  Essential Oil

10 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

Benefits of Healing Touch

Do you know………To love and being loved, is a fundamental human right. It’s something that just happens in human social relations and settings. Love is a gift and one should always treasure it. Together with a compliment or a kind word at the right moment, a caress is like food for our emotional well-being. Every living creature (human as well as animals-pets, I even touch and talk to my plants) needs physical contact to have a sense of security, sense of strength, sense of belonging in their group, their family, their community. A compassionate, loving-caring touch is an important part of our survival and well-being, whether it is an adult or a child or an animal. Especially, for our aging population with dementia (in 2013, an estimated 15 million family and friends in the U.S. provided care to a loved one with dementia), or with serious health issues at home or nursing homes and/or in hospice care.

    Benefits of Healing Touch

The Healing Touch Program (HTP) is an evidence based international, multi-level educational program in energy medicine therapy based on the curriculum created by registered nurse Janet Mentgen in 1989. This energy-based healing modality is gentle, biofield (magnetic energy field around the body), nurturing therapy that takes place without invasive procedures, medications or equipment. The practitioner simply places his or her hands lightly on or just above the individual in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Energy therapies focus on removing energy congestion that form in our energy fields (aura) and energy centers (chakras). Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the body, mind and soul to restore health and promote self-healing. Over the years, researchers have developed ways to measure the energy field. For further information on HTP, please do your own research.

Therefore, it’s necessary for health care providers to practice this holistic approach to meet the psychological and behavioral health needs of their patients-clients. Healing touch is currently used in hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. I always perform the ‘M’ Technique® (learnt during my Dr. Jane Buckle’s Clinical Aromatherapy training) on my clients to provide therapeutic hand and/or foot massage with compassionate touch during their aromatherapy, energy healing session using essential oils to enhance the healing process.

Essential Oils are natural liquid compound extracted from different parts of the plants and possess unique therapeutic properties. Essential Oils have been used since centuries in perfumery and as a physical, spiritual, emotional healing aid. Essential oils high in sesquiterpenes can cross the blood-brain barrier.

Absorption of Essential Oils

Do you know……..Essential oils get absorbed in our body in three ways, either by:

Inhalation through Olfactory System

Topical application (through skin)

Ingestion

Inhalation is the easiest, effective, and inexpensive mode of Essential oil administration that can be carried out anywhere at any time. Inhalation is especially helpful in alleviating emotional problems like stress, anxiety, depression and respiratory problems, as some essential can be directly transported to the lungs within no time. The sense of smell is the most primitive of all our senses and travels to brain faster than sight or sound. Aroma can trigger memory of emotional and even physical responses of people or places. When any scent is inhaled, the aromatic molecules travel up to the nose and get trapped by olfactory membrane nerve cells that triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb that transmits impulses to the limbic system of the brain. Limbic system directly connects to those parts of the brain that controls our heart rate, breathing, memory, stress level. Therefore, Essential Oils can have profound physiological, psychological effect on our well-being. Helen Keller, an American Educator, who was deaf and blind, once said, “Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived.”

Essential oils are applied topically, either neat (undiluted) or as a blend in a carrier oil. Essential oils are lipophilic (fat-loving or fat-soluble) i.e. they mix well with oil and have a greater tendency for transdermal absorption. Researchers have proved that all essential oil components have molecular weight under 500 Dalton (the standard measurement unit of atomic mass), so they penetrate through outer layer of our skin, the epidermis, with relative ease, make into the bloodstream, and diffuse to various organs. Skin (outer layer) —-> Skin (inner layer) —-> Capillaries —->Blood stream —-> Target organs —-> Cell receptors —> Metabolized and excreted. While traveling in the body, the oils also act to revitalize and detoxify organs involved in metabolism and drainage (kidneys, liver and lymphatic network).  Besides this, viscosity of essential oils also effect the penetration through the epidermis to blood vessels for systemic circulation.

The oral ingestion of essential oils is not a common practice in the US, but in France, it is more common, under the observation of a trained Aromatherapists, specially trained physicians, and pharmacists. Studies show that taking essential oils internally is the least effective way to reap their therapeutic benefits as the oil ends up in the digestive tract before reaching the bloodstream. Oral ingestion of essential oils is NOT recommended for the general public because some essential oils can be toxic to the liver or kidneys, or could show potential drug interactions, or the beneficial chemical constitution could change during gastric processing. Therefore, either educate yourself in essential oil practice or seek expert advice.

Opioid Epidemic

Do you know……. As the opioid epidemic worsens and Fentanyl, a highly potent opiate, one of the most powerful drugs ever created, which is now the leading cause of overdose deaths, I thought of doing some investigation and sharing the information with my readers, clients, family, and friends. Heroin and other opioids are ravaging communities across America, as a matter of fact the entire world. According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), on average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose and in 2017, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioids and illegal opioids like heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl) was 6 times higher than in 1999. The Nation is amidst an unprecedented opioid epidemic. Prevention and access to treatment for opioid addiction and overdose reversal drugs are critical to fighting this epidemic for individuals with both behavioral health (including substance use) and primary care needs.

Opioids are so often misused, because while they are prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, they induce the feelings of euphoria and stress relief. Because of this inherent qualities of opioids, patients/users start misusing opioids, taking them in larger quantities than prescribed and become addicted. Opioids, natural or synthetic, illicit or prescribed, act on the body’s opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain and all carry similarly high risks of dependency, addiction and overdose. In 2017 HHS (US Dept of Health and Human Services) declared a public health emergency and announced a 5-Point Strategy To Combat the Opioid Crisis:

  • Improving access to treatment and recovery services;
  • Promoting use of overdose-reversing drugs;
  • Strengthening our understanding of the epidemic through better public health surveillance;
  • Providing support for cutting edge research on pain and addiction; and
  • Advancing better practices for pain management

What are Opioids? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opioid_epidemic

Opioids are a diverse class of moderately strong painkillers, including Oxycodone (commonly sold under the trade names OxyContin and Percocet), hydrocodone (VicodinNorco), and a very strong painkiller, Fentanyl, which is synthesized to resemble other opiates such as opium-derived morphine and heroin.[1] The potency and availability of these substances, despite their high risk of addiction and overdose, have made them popular both as medical treatments and as recreational drugs. Due to their sedative effects on the part of the brain which regulates breathing, the respiratory center of the medulla oblongata, opioids in high doses present the potential for respiratory depression, and may cause respiratory failure and death.

A person who is addicted develops an overpowering urge, or craving, for the drug. The person also experiences a loss of control and painful withdrawal symptoms, making it more difficult to taper off or refuse the drug. The current opioid epidemic is the increase in directly injecting opioids or other substances into a vein (Intravenous -IV drug use). To safeguard the spread of this epidemic and help family, friends, or a loved one:

  • Educate yourself to spot the early warning signs.
  • Patient or the care giver should monitor how many pills are in each of prescription bottles or pill packets, and keep track of refills. If you find you need to refill your medicine more often than expected, that could indicate a problem. Keep prescription drugs locked away from children and other’s reach.
  • Safely disposing of expired or unused medicine is a critical step in helping to decrease the opportunity for adults or your kids or their friends to abuse your medicine. The ideal way to dispose off safely through local legally organized collection centers or drug take-back day, an ongoing program in community, a drug deactivation bag, or a drug mail-back program. To find a take-back location or event near you, visit the American Medicine Chest Challengeor the DEA website.
  • Reach out for assistance and take help.

Opioids use (prescribed or illegal) pose a significant health problem throughout much of North America. It’s beyond the scope of this article to cover every aspect of opioid epidemic and crisis. For more information, please do personal research, inquires, and educate yourself. Some useful sites:

Vibrational Healing with Aromatherapy

Do you know…… The aura is an electromagnetic force field that surrounds all living things in both the animal and plant kingdom and interpenetrates the physical body. Everything is made up of energy and has a vibrational frequency which is the rate at which vibration occurs and it could be changed. Our body attunes to its surroundings. That’s why it’s important to surround with things that have a positive frequency or vibration (vibes or awareness). Any energy disturbances i.e. the

         Vibrational Healing with Essential Oil

change in the harmonious coherent frequencies of the subtle body due to any physical or emotional or organic imbalance, precede the appearance of disease and illness in the physical body. This blockage of the flow of life energy can be characterized by inflammation, irritation, and illness. The frequency of human body can be measured by a Biofeedback machine, that usually operate by detecting skin temperature, muscle tension, and/or brain wave activity.

According to researchers in Washington, using Tainio Technology, the vibrational frequency of Essential oils are the highest of any other measured natural substances. Essential oils have been used for centuries for their healing and medicinal properties. Through the principle of entrainment, the oil’s higher frequency will raise the vibratory quality of the individual. For example;

Rose oil is typically cited as the highest frequency essential oil, resonating at 320 MHz (although some research has indicated that Idaho Blue Spruce can reach up to 580 MHz). Frequencies of some common essential oils:

Frankincense: 147 MHz

Lavender: 118 MHz

Myrrh: 105 MHz

Sandalwood: 98 MHz

Angelica: 85 MHz

Peppermint: 78 MHz

Basil: 52 MHz

A healthy body typically has a frequency ranging from 62 to 78 MHz, whereas disease sets in at 57 MHz. Fresh produce and herbs vibrate from 20 to 27 MHz, whereas dry herbs carry a frequency between 12 and 22 MHz. Canned and processed foods have no measurable frequency (0 MHz).

Based on the information, by changing your food choices and by smelling, diffusing, and topically applying high quality Essential oils, you can almost immediately increase your vibrational energy for your well-being.

De-stress with Aromatherapy

Do you know………We’re a society of chronic stress or should I say, we create stress because of our thinking and our reaction to the situation. It’s an awful fact, that many of us don’t realize, but everyone likes to have some peace – quiet and the inner serenity. Our body reacts to stress in many of the same ways it reacts to a perceived threat. While vastly different, each stressful situation; whether life-threatening or simple inconvenience, or dealing with our day to day life or constantly under attack by outside forces (especially, our own loved ones), triggers a fight or flight response, releasing adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Adrenaline increases blood pressure and boosts energy supplies, while cortisol releases glucose into the bloodstream, and even altering the immune system which can cause some serious health risks, including:

Insomnia

High blood-pressure

Depression, Increased anxiety

Hormonal imbalances

Hostility and rage

Aggressive and impulsive behavior

Which is why we need to work towards decluttering our life. Take a step back, and assess what is stressing you out? Learn how to reverse the biological mechanism of the sympathetic nervous system? Develop positive thinking which strengthens your focus and inner resolve, learn how to use empowering, encouraging self-dialogue that releases serotonin, dopamine, allows opening the needed inner resources to be successful. Also, an effective communication is the most important life-skill, that extends and connects us and helps in developing relationship with others.

There are medications (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, and Ativan) that act as tranquilizer (that slow down the nervous system which in turn creates a relaxing and calming effect) to help deal with anxiety, but with side effects and safety concerns, such as the risk of addiction. U

se of Essential Oils through Aromatherapy is an extremely powerful alternative holistic approach. It can conjure memories both good and bad, excite us, soothe us, even promotes sleep. Essential oils are natural volatile plant extract that have been used since centuries for healing and beauty products.

Several essential oils can slow brain wave patterns to produce sensations of relaxation. This mode of action is similar to sedative type drugs (only milder and without any of the bad side effects). Like: Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage, Helichrysum, Lemon, Mandarin, Marjoram, Neroli, Ylang Ylang , Vetiver, Rose, Spikenard and Frankincense. Several of these oils can help to produce a spiritual calmness if we wish to meditate; Vetiver, Roman Chamomile, Rose, S

pikenard and Frankincense.

Calming Aromatic Diffuser Blend

20 drops Roman Chamomile
15 drops Lavender
10 drops Orange
10 drops Geranium
5 drops Ylang Ylang

Combine Essential Oils in a 5ml dark glass Euro vial or with dropper, cover, label and mix well. Add 5-10 drops to water in diffuser for relaxing, calming aromatic experience.
