De-Stress with Aromatherapy

Do you know………….. We’re a society of chronic stress, an awful fact, that many of us don’t realize, but everyone likes to have some peace, quiet, and the inner serenity. We all know, here in America, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, which is around the corner and is considered start of our Holiday season.

                  De-Stress with Aromatherapy

Especially around Holidays, we get stressed for many reasons like; the stress of planning, stress of gift exchange, stress of having family-friends over or visiting them, financial stress, the stress of keeping up with the fast-pace schedule amidst job-family responsibilities, and forget to enjoy the celebration.

While vastly different, each stressful situation, whether life-threatening or simple inconvenience, or dealing with day to day life or constantly under attack by outside forces (especially, our own loved ones), triggers a fight or flight response, releasing adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Adrenaline increases blood pressure and boosts energy supplies, while cortisol releases glucose into the bloodstream, and even altering the immune system, which can cause some serious health risks including:

Insomnia

High blood-pressure

Depression, Increased anxiety

Hormonal imbalances

Hostility and rage

Aggressive and impulsive behavior

This is why we need to work towards de-cluttering our life. Take a step back, and assess what is stressing you out? To avoid the holiday stress, plan things ahead of time including the regular weekly schedule, try to incorporate 20-60 minutes of daily exercise routine, make sure to have 8 hours of quality sleep per night, and spend time with family-friends-loved ones to comfort the heart and soul.

Aromatherapy is an effective alternative healthcare modality with the use of Essential oils that are probably best known for their calming and relaxing properties to maintain physical and mental health. Essential Oils are aromatic, volatile, liquid concentrate, extracted and distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, and/or other parts of a plant. Essential Oils can be applied topically with proper dilution on wrist, neck, temple or can be used in diffuser. Some of the pure, natural, classic holiday aroma of Essential Oils such as; Cinnamon, Clove, Pine, Orange, Tangerine, Peppermint, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Ginger, Lavender, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Spruce, Patchouli, can help weather seasonal stress.

Holiday Aromatic Diffuser Blend

30 drops Sweet Orange

10 drops Cinnamon bark

10 drops Clove

5 drops Geranium or Ylang ylang

5 drops Pine

Blend oils in a 5 ml dark glass euro bottle, close, mix, label, and add 8-10 drops to diffuser or in a candle warmer as desired.

Alleviate Anxiety with Aromatherapy

Do you know…….Generally Labor Day weekend means, end of summer is upon us. That is, winding down from summer craziness of traveling-camping-back yard parties-beaches-park

        Alleviate Anxiety with Essential Oil

rides, and for most of the students, start of new school year after a long summer break. This year in Mid-West, we had a very short Summer, no Fall, and sudden Winter with unseasonal snow on Halloween. So, guess what, we had a white Halloween and now Christmas is around the corner. For many, all this could be a cause of anxiety.

Anxiety is a general feeling of apprehension and feeling anxious about a situation, eg: social anxiety, reaching school on time, new classmates. new teachers, homework, about the future, going for a job interview, separation anxiety, etc. It’s normal to experience occasional anxiety, but when it becomes persistent and overwhelming, then it could be anxiety disorder, eg: obsessive compulsive disorder, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), panic attacks and needs immediate medical attention. Anxiety-related illnesses are on the rise. Anxiety is often linked to depression and living with anxiety could be exhausting which could happen at any time. Anxiety is not just in someone’s head as it often manifests in physical symptoms of depression, dizziness, fainting, heart palpitations, lethargy, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, nausea, nervous twitches, sweating, shaking, stuttering, and even suicidal thoughts. The constant struggle with anxiety, could wear people down emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Many studies have shown the usefulness of Essential Oils in alleviating anxiety. Since centuries, Essential Oils have been utilized in cosmetics, fragrances, healing, as an antiseptic, and for health remedies. These Essential Oils are natural, volatile, concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, bark, or blossoms of plants. It should be diluted for a safe topical application following all safety rules and an expert advice. Following Essential Oils could be used to relieve anxiety symptoms:

Emotional Health Bonding

Do you know……. I heard on Brahma Kumaris ((World Spiritual Organization) talk show, that to Give, you have to be Emotionally Rich. This doesn’t mean that emotionally healthy people don’t feel stress, anger, and sadness, but they know how to effectively manage their negative

feelings? Emotional Health Bonding is focusing on being in tune with our emotions which fosters resilience, self-awareness, and overall contentment together with our sound physical health. We should groom our emotional bonding before getting into any relationship. Here I am not talking only about friendship or marriage or parenting type of relationship, rather from the time of conceiving, we should establish an emotional health bonding with the fetus in mother’s womb. Believe it or not, we are creating the child’s personality in the womb. We have heard that our mood (e.g.: anger, sadness, stress, frustrations) regulates type of hormonal secretion in our body, which in turn affects baby’s physical and emotional growth in the womb. Therefore, during pregnancy one should not only take care of their physical health, but should be mindful of their surroundings, their thoughts, and their emotional health.

It’s so true, in this fast-paced technology driven world, as we go about doing our business, we constantly pick up emotional baggage of negativity. Some of the hurtful comments and situations continue to play over and over in our head which after a while causes damaging effect to our emotional as well as physical health. Therefore, it’s of utmost importance that we take time to review, unload, and free ourselves of these toxic build ups to enjoy the gift of today.

There are many ways to improve and maintain good emotional health:

Be aware of your emotions and reactions to make proper adjustments

Express your feelings in appropriate manner without keeping it inside

Think calmly before acting on your emotions

Manage your stress through relaxation, breathing, yoga, meditation

Strive for healthy balance between work, family, and your own needs

Take care of your physical health by exercising, healthy diet, and good sleep

Create positive social connections with others

Find purpose and meaning in your life by volunteering, helping others in need

Stay positive, be thankful, forgive others and forgive yourself for making mistakes, spread love

Researchers have found that Essential oils are a great way to reconnect back with nature and to achieve feelings of peace and forgiveness. When we inhale a distinct aroma, the scent travels through the olfactory system (controls our sense of smell) to the limbic system of our brain that produces a distinct response to the aroma to enhance our well-being and manage emotions. Based on individual requirement, can use following category essential oils to reap the benefit:

Calming Essential oils: Floral oils, are typically composed of monoterpene alcohols that have calming properties
Grounding Essential Oils: Tree, herb, and grass oils, primarily include sesquiterpenes, esters, and oxides that have grounding, soothing emotions and feelings of renewal properties
Uplifting & Energizing Essential Oils: Citrus oils, typically possess limonene, beta-pinene, and monoterpenes and Peppermint oil is energizing because high concentration of ketones
Warming Essential Oils: Typically Spice oils, because of their phenol content
Use our Serenity Blend Spray for achieving a state of relaxation and refreshing feel. Can be misted lightly on body and neck or use as a room freshener.

Being Love

Do you know………..Our world topples over, when we are betrayed by the person, who we trusted and believed with our life. When you reach your pain threshold, you realize the truth that you have lost everything to your foolishness. We try to blame that person for our irreversible devastation without accepting the fact that, we are the one who gave that power to manipulate our emotions and sincere feelings. We thought he/she is our ‘Soul Mate’, but we didn’t understand the real meaning of this term, which is where two souls are in harmony in their energy of love, peace, and respect for each other. Sharing the joys and wonders of life with another being who lights up your world is priceless, which something every human being deserves to experience, but not at the cost of manipulation.

This is where ‘Being Love’, comes into play. We are trying to experience the bliss from external sources and seeking other’s approval, thinking that is natural, but not paying attention to our ‘Inner Self’. We believe our identity to be; our name, our position, our fame, our relationship, our family, our nationality, our religion, and our physical body that we have acquired on the journey of life. We have to experience the soul consciousness, because feeling inherently loved, powerful, blissful, and worthy comes from within not from your partner or from outside. Give this precious gift to yourself of ‘Myself’ and love yourself the way you are. Don’t waste your energy trying to change opinions. “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection” – Buddha. “To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness.”Robert Morley. A powerful tool to make yourself feel better is to live in the moment and Mindful Meditation.

Benefits of Healing Touch

Do you know………To love and being loved, is a fundamental human right. It’s something that just happens in human social relations and settings. Love is a gift and one should always treasure it. Together with a compliment or a kind word at the right moment, a caress is like food for our emotional well-being. Every living creature (human as well as animals-pets, I even touch and talk to my plants) needs physical contact to have a sense of security, sense of strength, sense of belonging in their group, their family, their community. A compassionate, loving-caring touch is an important part of our survival and well-being, whether it is an adult or a child or an animal. Especially, for our aging population with dementia (in 2013, an estimated 15 million family and friends in the U.S. provided care to a loved one with dementia), or with serious health issues at home or nursing homes and/or in hospice care.

    Benefits of Healing Touch

The Healing Touch Program (HTP) is an evidence based international, multi-level educational program in energy medicine therapy based on the curriculum created by registered nurse Janet Mentgen in 1989. This energy-based healing modality is gentle, biofield (magnetic energy field around the body), nurturing therapy that takes place without invasive procedures, medications or equipment. The practitioner simply places his or her hands lightly on or just above the individual in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Energy therapies focus on removing energy congestion that form in our energy fields (aura) and energy centers (chakras). Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the body, mind and soul to restore health and promote self-healing. Over the years, researchers have developed ways to measure the energy field. For further information on HTP, please do your own research.

Therefore, it’s necessary for health care providers to practice this holistic approach to meet the psychological and behavioral health needs of their patients-clients. Healing touch is currently used in hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. I always perform the ‘M’ Technique® (learnt during my Dr. Jane Buckle’s Clinical Aromatherapy training) on my clients to provide therapeutic hand and/or foot massage with compassionate touch during their aromatherapy, energy healing session using essential oils to enhance the healing process.

Essential Oils are natural liquid compound extracted from different parts of the plants and possess unique therapeutic properties. Essential Oils have been used since centuries in perfumery and as a physical, spiritual, emotional healing aid. Essential oils high in sesquiterpenes can cross the blood-brain barrier.

Absorption of Essential Oils

Do you know……..Essential oils get absorbed in our body in three ways, either by:

Inhalation through Olfactory System

Topical application (through skin)

Ingestion

Inhalation is the easiest, effective, and inexpensive mode of Essential oil administration that can be carried out anywhere at any time. Inhalation is especially helpful in alleviating emotional problems like stress, anxiety, depression and respiratory problems, as some essential can be directly transported to the lungs within no time. The sense of smell is the most primitive of all our senses and travels to brain faster than sight or sound. Aroma can trigger memory of emotional and even physical responses of people or places. When any scent is inhaled, the aromatic molecules travel up to the nose and get trapped by olfactory membrane nerve cells that triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb that transmits impulses to the limbic system of the brain. Limbic system directly connects to those parts of the brain that controls our heart rate, breathing, memory, stress level. Therefore, Essential Oils can have profound physiological, psychological effect on our well-being. Helen Keller, an American Educator, who was deaf and blind, once said, “Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived.”

Essential oils are applied topically, either neat (undiluted) or as a blend in a carrier oil. Essential oils are lipophilic (fat-loving or fat-soluble) i.e. they mix well with oil and have a greater tendency for transdermal absorption. Researchers have proved that all essential oil components have molecular weight under 500 Dalton (the standard measurement unit of atomic mass), so they penetrate through outer layer of our skin, the epidermis, with relative ease, make into the bloodstream, and diffuse to various organs. Skin (outer layer) —-> Skin (inner layer) —-> Capillaries —->Blood stream —-> Target organs —-> Cell receptors —> Metabolized and excreted. While traveling in the body, the oils also act to revitalize and detoxify organs involved in metabolism and drainage (kidneys, liver and lymphatic network).  Besides this, viscosity of essential oils also effect the penetration through the epidermis to blood vessels for systemic circulation.

The oral ingestion of essential oils is not a common practice in the US, but in France, it is more common, under the observation of a trained Aromatherapists, specially trained physicians, and pharmacists. Studies show that taking essential oils internally is the least effective way to reap their therapeutic benefits as the oil ends up in the digestive tract before reaching the bloodstream. Oral ingestion of essential oils is NOT recommended for the general public because some essential oils can be toxic to the liver or kidneys, or could show potential drug interactions, or the beneficial chemical constitution could change during gastric processing. Therefore, either educate yourself in essential oil practice or seek expert advice.

Opioid Epidemic

Do you know……. As the opioid epidemic worsens and Fentanyl, a highly potent opiate, one of the most powerful drugs ever created, which is now the leading cause of overdose deaths, I thought of doing some investigation and sharing the information with my readers, clients, family, and friends. Heroin and other opioids are ravaging communities across America, as a matter of fact the entire world. According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), on average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose and in 2017, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioids and illegal opioids like heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl) was 6 times higher than in 1999. The Nation is amidst an unprecedented opioid epidemic. Prevention and access to treatment for opioid addiction and overdose reversal drugs are critical to fighting this epidemic for individuals with both behavioral health (including substance use) and primary care needs.

Opioids are so often misused, because while they are prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, they induce the feelings of euphoria and stress relief. Because of this inherent qualities of opioids, patients/users start misusing opioids, taking them in larger quantities than prescribed and become addicted. Opioids, natural or synthetic, illicit or prescribed, act on the body’s opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain and all carry similarly high risks of dependency, addiction and overdose. In 2017 HHS (US Dept of Health and Human Services) declared a public health emergency and announced a 5-Point Strategy To Combat the Opioid Crisis:

  • Improving access to treatment and recovery services;
  • Promoting use of overdose-reversing drugs;
  • Strengthening our understanding of the epidemic through better public health surveillance;
  • Providing support for cutting edge research on pain and addiction; and
  • Advancing better practices for pain management

What are Opioids? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opioid_epidemic

Opioids are a diverse class of moderately strong painkillers, including Oxycodone (commonly sold under the trade names OxyContin and Percocet), hydrocodone (VicodinNorco), and a very strong painkiller, Fentanyl, which is synthesized to resemble other opiates such as opium-derived morphine and heroin.[1] The potency and availability of these substances, despite their high risk of addiction and overdose, have made them popular both as medical treatments and as recreational drugs. Due to their sedative effects on the part of the brain which regulates breathing, the respiratory center of the medulla oblongata, opioids in high doses present the potential for respiratory depression, and may cause respiratory failure and death.

A person who is addicted develops an overpowering urge, or craving, for the drug. The person also experiences a loss of control and painful withdrawal symptoms, making it more difficult to taper off or refuse the drug. The current opioid epidemic is the increase in directly injecting opioids or other substances into a vein (Intravenous -IV drug use). To safeguard the spread of this epidemic and help family, friends, or a loved one:

  • Educate yourself to spot the early warning signs.
  • Patient or the care giver should monitor how many pills are in each of prescription bottles or pill packets, and keep track of refills. If you find you need to refill your medicine more often than expected, that could indicate a problem. Keep prescription drugs locked away from children and other’s reach.
  • Safely disposing of expired or unused medicine is a critical step in helping to decrease the opportunity for adults or your kids or their friends to abuse your medicine. The ideal way to dispose off safely through local legally organized collection centers or drug take-back day, an ongoing program in community, a drug deactivation bag, or a drug mail-back program. To find a take-back location or event near you, visit the American Medicine Chest Challengeor the DEA website.
  • Reach out for assistance and take help.

Opioids use (prescribed or illegal) pose a significant health problem throughout much of North America. It’s beyond the scope of this article to cover every aspect of opioid epidemic and crisis. For more information, please do personal research, inquires, and educate yourself. Some useful sites:
