Aromatherapy Application for PTSD

On this Memorial Day, I thought of talking about PTSD. What is PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)? It is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people (of any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age) who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as; a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault. PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults and women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD. Military personnel are among the most at-risk populations for exposure to traumatic events and combat-related stress disorders.

 

It is natural to feel afraid and be in emotional disharmony during and after a traumatic experience. Re-experiencing symptoms, from the person’s own thoughts, feelings, anger, distressing dreams, objects, flashbacks, or situations, could trigger the past and may cause problems in a person’s everyday routine, relationships. Not everyone exposed to a traumatized event is diagnosed with PTSD. Most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger. Negative thoughts and feelings about oneself or others (e.g., “I am bad,” “No one can be trusted”), ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt or shame, less interest in activities previously enjoyed, feeling detached or estranged from other, being irritable and having angry outbursts, behaving recklessly or in a self-destructive way,  being easily startled, lack of sleep and concentration

information and new integrative care modalities. Individuals with PTSD are often  treated with psychotherapeutic drugs, but it should be handled in conjunction with other safe alternative healthcare approach like clinical Aromatherapy. Though, several research are being conducted to validate the effect of aroma on PTSD and emotional distress, we are familiar with the therapeutic properties of Essential Oils and their physiological effects on brain to heal the mind-body. Essential oils directly impact the brain’s Limbic system where Amygdala is located. This is the region of the brain that activates our fight and flight response at the time of danger and trauma. Special blends of essential oils as well as applying oils to specific points (acupoints) on the body help to calm the nervous system and to harmonize our Qi (energy or life force of the body) and Shen (cognitive and emotional life).

Spray Mist – Place 12 drops of appropriate essential oil/s in a 60ml (2oz) spray bottle, fill with distilled water, Close, label. Shake well before each use and spray in the room before and/or after Reiki session.

Tissue – Put 2 drops of your blend on a tissue and place it beside the pillow.

Hands – Place 1-2 drops of appropriate essential oil or blend in the palm of your hand, rub hands together, have your client inhale deeply the aroma before commencing reiki.

Scientific Name Importance in Aromatherapy

Do you know…… Scientific system of nomenclature is a system of unique name, used by scientists to identify an organism and plant based on their common traits and their origin. It consists of Genus (a generic epithet ), followed by species (a specific epithet). Unlike common names, these scientific names are important, because they allow people, scientists, researchers throughout the world to communicate ambiguously about animals and plants and usually come from Latin or Greek. For example, the scientific name of, narrow leaf firethorn is Pyracantha (Greek for fire) angustifolia (Latin for narrow leaves).

Swedish botanist, Carl Linne (Linnaeus, 1707-1778), devised Binomial System (two name naming system) of precise identification of plants called Taxonomy, which is used internationally. The Binomial name consists of a Genus, which is always written first and capitalized and followed by a species which is in lower case and the entire name is italicized. Here are the levels of highest to lowest classification as follows:

In Aromatherapy, which is the science and art of using natural, volatile essence of different parts of plants, called Essential Oils, extracted usually by Steam Distillation. Each Essential Oil possess different chemical component giving it different therapeutic properties that is utilized to harmonize our physical and mental well-being. There still, remains much to be discovered through research and experience. Since, Essential Oils are derived from the plant kingdom, it’s important to identify them by their scientific names for their proper therapeutic properties. In Aromatherapy, generally Family, Genus, and Species is used, eg;

Variety (var), is used for subdivision of species for the variant of horticultural origin or importance, eg; Bitter orange

Welcome Spring with Aromatherapy

Pampering our Feet with Aromatherapy

Do you know…….Our feet is the most neglected part of our body, while they deserve lot of pampering. Because, our feet carry our weight (light or heavy) day after day without any vacation

except for the night time when most of us are in bed sleeping or if we are sick. We cram our feet into tight socks, gym shoes, and pinching high heels, or standing around chatting-working, or walking to class-work-to the car, or running to catch a train-bus, or exercising, etc., etc. Energetically the feet represent our connection with earth and rooting us to Mother Nature, the sense of being grounded.

There are 26 bones in each foot and there are over 7,000 nerve endings called reflexes that correspond to every organ and system within our body. By pressing on these reflex points, we can stimulate the nervous system and open energy pathways that may be blocked or congested.

That’s why when we walk bare feet on fine sand or soft grass, we get the mesmerizing euphoric feel.

We should not wait to take care of our feet only when it starts to hurt, rather give it a tender loving care (TLC) at regular interval with reflexology, footbath and foot massage with Essential oil, that can reduce pain, stress, dryness, and can have calming effect. Essential Oils are natural extracts of plants with amazing individual therapeutic properties and have been used since centuries to cure different ailments. Especially, people with diabetes can have more damaged nerve endings. Here is couple of my Essential Oil blends that you could make at home and enjoy the affordable spa like treatment.

Relaxing Sugar Pedi Scrub:

¼ cup fine white sugar

¼ cup brown sugar

½  cup olive oil(can use Almond Carrier Oil)

15 drs Lavender Essential Oil(for winter can use Cinnamon E. Oil)

15 drs Lemon Essential Oil

10 drs Peppermint Essential Oil

8 drs Geranium Essential Oil (can use Ylang ylang E. Oil)

5 dr Vit E

Mix sugar well in a glass bowl making sure no lumps present. Add essential oils in different places on sugar mixture and mix well. Add rest of the ingredients and mix well. Store in individual tin or glass containers or in a large glass jar and close the lid. Label.

The best way to take full advantage of the scrub is to have a footbath ready (heat up 2-3 pints of water, pour into a foot bowl or any large pan-tub-bucket that you could soak feet). First gently massage the scrub on your ankles and feet, then soak feet in the ready footbath till the water is warm or 10-15 minutes, gently wash off the residual scrub in the footbath water, and pat dry your feet with a towel. Or if you just want to soak the feet in warm footbath without massaging the foot scrub, add 1/4 cup of Epsom salt and some Essential Oil (may be 4 drops Lavender Essential Oil, 2 drops Lemon Essential Oil, 2 drops Tea tree Essential Oil) to give your achy-tired feet some relief, wash off any foot odour, and feel rejuvenated.

2 drops Chamomile Essential Oil

Add salts to a large glass bowl, pour castile soap, add essential oils, mix gently with steel spoon. Now add this to your warm bath to enjoy the aromatic, relaxing bath or store in a glass jar, cover, label for future use. Only make a small batch at a time.
