Syllable OM (ॐ)

The Syllable OM (ॐ)
A Lovely  Monday Morning to you all!

PLEASE STAY SAFE FROM CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19). FOLLOW GOOD HAND HYGIENE and MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING.

Do you know………I was always intrigued by this simple ‘OM’ (ॐ) syllable that is chanted either independently or before a spiritual recitation and is commonly associated with Indian  religious beliefs and practices. Now that I am heavily involved with Yog Sadhana and Chakra Healing practices, I was searching for the real meaning of the mystical sound and

got perplexed with the depth of this OM syllable, which is beyond the scope of this article. In our Western world, generally OM is considered synonymous with Yoga, but it’s far more complex. OM is the basic sound of the universe that allows us to harmonize with the external forces and with our own nature internally. It attunes us to Cosmic Consciousness and the sacred vibratory patterns that arise from it. So by chanting it, we are acknowledging our connection to nature and all other living beings. It is the first sound from the beginning of time, which encompasses the present and the future, representing the union of mind, body, and spirit. In the chakra system, it is connected to Ajna chakra (the third eye chakra) and the Sahastrar chakra (the crown chakra), which represents intuition, self-knowledge, and divinity.

According to Wikipedia, Om or Aum (ॐ) is a sacred sound and the most sacred, important spiritual symbol[8][9] in Indian religions. It refers to Atman (soul, self within) and Brahman (the highest Universal Principle, the ultimate reality, entirety of the universe, truth, divine, supreme spirit, cosmic principles, knowledge).[10] The syllable Om is also referred to as omkara (ओङ्कार, oṅkāra),  and pranava (प्रणव, praṇava).[15][16], which means to be in control of one’s life force. In The Mandukya Upanishad, text associated with the Vedanta  philosophy, OM connotes the metaphysical concept of Brahman, is the bija mantra  called the pranava (“uttering”). It gives the symbolic meaning of this mantra, “OM! This Imperishable Word is the whole of this visible Universe. Its explanation is as follows: What has become, what is becoming, what will become—verily, all of this is OM. And what is beyond these three states of the world of time—that too, verily, is OM.”

The OM (ॐ) symbol is a combination of curves, a crescent and a dot. Visual form, comes from the states of consciousness that OM represents. OM is pronounced like “AUM” and consists of four syllables: A, U, M, and the silent syllable anusvara. The first syllable is A, pronounced as a prolonged “awe.” The sound starts at the back of our throat and stretched out. We will feel our solar plexus and chest vibrating. The second syllable is U, pronounced as a prolonged “oo,” with the sound gradually rolling forward along our upper palate that gives the vibration in our throat. The third syllable is M, pronounced as a prolonged “mmmm” with our front teeth and lips gently touching feeling the vibration in our mouth. The last syllable is the deep silence of the Infinite, merged from the M (the nasal after sound or vibration at the end of the M sound, which represents a nasal humming). The four phonetic components of AUM represent the Four States of Consciousness:

A-The state of wakefulness, where we experience things externally through our mind and sense organs

UThe dream state, in which we experience our inner self

MThe state of deep sleep

Turya (the “fourth”)-The nasal humming at the end of the M sound, is the transcendental Self beyond the mind.

It also represent the rule of divine energy of Holy Trinity, GOD; Brahma (G-the generator or the creator, i.e. creation), Vishnu (O-the operator or the sustainer, i.e. preservation), and Shiva (D-the destroyer, i.e.liberation).

Now we know that the entire universe is made of energy which is constantly vibrating (vibrational energy). The sound OM, when chanted, vibrates at the frequency of 432 Hz, which is the same vibrational frequency found throughout everything in nature. Interestingly, Researchers have recorded the frequency of sound OM to be exactly the same as the frequency of earth’s rotation around its own axis. Scientists have studied the effects of OM chanting on the brain, of the 2018 study, published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry, noted that OM chanting is associated with an experience of relaxation, specifically in the autonomic nervous system (which regulates heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, and other internal functions), and deactivation of limbic brain regions (an area that controls emotion, memories and arousal). Researchers also observed brain activity during the OM chanting period, which was similar to that created by vagus nerve stimulation, used to treat depression and epilepsy. Scientists concluded that chanting OM may have potential in the treatment of major depressive disorder, though more work is still to be done.
