Aromatherapy and Essential Oil

Do you know……………Aromatherapy is an art and science of using Essential Oils for our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, while Essential Oils with different therapeutic properties are the natural, concentrated, volatile, extracted product of the plants and its parts. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative, holistic medicine that can be used in conjunction with allopathic/conventional medicine to alleviate physical and emotional ailments.

Essential oils have been used for centuries as healing agents, fragrance for promoting health and relaxation, as well as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiseptic agents. The term Essential Oil means that it carries a distinct essence of plant and has been referred as ‘Liquid sun energy’ by Ayurvedic medicine. Since ancient times, the aromatic plants have been used in herbal medicinal healing in; India, China, Egypt, Greece, France, and by Native Americans. The modern day Aromatherapy was accidentally discovered by a French Chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, in 1910, when he got burnt while working in the laboratory and dipped his hand in the basin of a liquid, which turned out to be the Lavender Essential Oil. His work was published in 1937 under, ‘Aromatherapie’, followed by Dr. Jean Valnet, an army physician (1920-1995), and Marguerite Maury, a nurse, did several research on Essential Oils and her book, ‘Le Capital Jeunesse’ was published in 1961. Throughout World WarII, Essential Oils were used to treat wounded soldiers. In recent times, Robert Tisserand, often called,‘The Father of Modern Aromatherapy’, who translated the first two Aromatherapy books into English and later wrote his own book, ‘The Art of Aromatherapy’.

Essential Oils are generally inhaled or applied topically with proper dilution (refer to aromawellness.net) on the skin, but oral use is permissible in France, Germany, and Switzerland. Just like any other medicine, proper safety and precaution must be observed during the application of Essential Oils.

Invigorating Body Wash for Health Care Workers

Do you know……..For all Health Care Workers, it’s important to maintain our physical-emotional health and stay fit spiritually so to continue to help others without causing harm to ourselves. Because we are constantly carrying the burden of others’ struggles-problems-sickness while coping with our own personal challenges. To live a true meaningful happy life is not only feeling good and living luxurious life rather contributing to others happiness and to be of service in the world which comes with spiritual maturity away from our own ego. I read somewhere, Ego is attachment to a rock image of ourselves and Spiritual development is the acceptance of mortality which unfortunately, most of us don’t think or speak about. We are unprepared for this natural process of regression from younger years to old age or to terminal illness and find it very difficult to embrace the death and the grief that accompanies life’s end. Spirituality, enables us to achieve this emotional balance between our accomplishments-failures, to reconnect-revise our plans, to forgive-be forgiven, say goodbye to this life-to people we love and welcome whatever might come next.

Here is the Aromatherapy invigorating Body Wash recipe to be used in the morning for uplifting and enhancing the mood:

Invigorating Body Wash

½ cup Unscented Castile Soap

¼ cup Aloe Vera Gel

¼ cup Sweet Almond, or can use Jojoba, Grape seed, Sesame, or olive oil

40 drops sweet Orange Essential Oil

20 drops Lavender Essential Oil

20 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

16 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

In 8oz(1cup) plastic squirt top bottle(to avoid falling and breaking of a glass bottle in shower), add unscented Castile Soap, Aloe Vera Gel, sweet Almond Oil, and Essential Oils, close the cap, mix, label and allow to set for 24 hours. Mix well before each use in the morning during shower

Goodbye to Negativity with Aromatherapy

Do you know…………Have you ever met Mr./Ms. Downer, who takes you to negative lane when you are trying to change your track? Negative energy in our space and aura, is not beneficial and can leave us more exhausted, stressed, anxious, and grumpy. We even forget to savor the everyday beauty in life. Our emotions are deeply embedded in our cells and based on how we process our emotions, our thoughts, we create negativity. Which means, our DIS-EASE, becomes the cause of our DISEASE. Signs of negativity:

Anger, usually directed at someone else

Fear of Abandonment

Anxiety, irritability

Fear of Failure

Low self esteem

Grief

In Ancient Egyptian and European cultures, in Eastern cultures and Native American cultures, it is believed that the built up negative energy in homes, spaces, body, and mind can be cleared with smudging rituals utilizing herbs and essential oils. Burn herbs like, Sage smudge sticks, Hyssop, Rosemary and fumigate your living space and yourself or simply sprinkle sea salt or put a bowl of sea salt in the corner of the room as salt crystals absorb negative energy (research the proper process of smudging).

Essential Oils are nature’s magic that have been used since ages can help create the environment conducive to living a happy, healthy, peaceful life by directly stimulating the limbic system of our brain, the “EMOTIONAL BRAIN”. Essential Oils have empowering, spiritual benefits to combat daily negativity with their natural chemical therapeutic properties:

Palo Santo (holy wood or sacred wood)

Cypress, Juniper Berry, Cedarwood

Grapefruit, Lemon

Frankincense, Myrrh

Sage, Basil, Fennel

Lavender, Patchouli

To remove negative thoughts and emotions:

First de-clutter your space to get rid of the mess around you.

Take a cold or warm shower as water have healing properties and helps to wash away the energetic mess that formulates around your body.

Practice regular Meditation and Yoga.

Diffuse and Inhale Essential Oils with loving intentions for calm and peace. Add few drops of Frankincense and Patchouli oils in your body lotion for amazing beauty benefits as well as a protective shield against negativity and peace of mind.

Do you know………According to Pew Research Center (is a nonpartisan American fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world), in 2016, a record 64 million people, or 20% of the U.S. population, lived with multiple generations under one roof and is increasing because of growing racial and ethnic diversity in the U.S. population. The Asian and Hispanic population groups are more likely than whites to live in multi-generational family households, defined as including two or more adult generations or including grand-parents and grand-children younger than 25 yrs Of age. Now a days, living with parents has become a common arrangement for adults ages 18 to 34.

Multi-Generational Household Stress

Multi-generational relations will be more important in the 21st century for the following reasons: (a) the demographic changes of population aging and living longer (b) the increasing importance of grandparents fulfilling family functions (c) the strength and resilience of inter-generational solidarity over time (d) changes in family structure involving divorce and step-family relationships. Research shows that living with other generation, has physical and mental health benefits, as well has its own complications too.

Multi-generational Household Benefits:

Caring-praying-celebrating together

Parents and Grand-Parents support in babysitting for working couples

Health care support to aging parents and vice-versa

Dependency and interference

Disrupt Dementia with Aromatherapy

Do you know…… According to WHO (World Health Organization), more than 6 million people in the United States suffer from various types of Dementia with over 47 million people living with dementia worldwide and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year. There is a lack of awareness and understanding of dementia in most countries, resulting in stigmatization, barriers to diagnosis and care.

Dementia is a syndrome, usually of a chronic or progressive nature. Dementia occurs when nerve cells in the brain become damaged causing a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behavior, orientation, comprehension, language, judgement, learning capacity, and ability to perform everyday activities. Consequently, there are various types of dementia, which are generally categorized by two factors: the section of the brain damaged, and the condition. Dementia is overwhelming not only for the people who have it, but also for their caregivers and takes devastating emotional, financial, and physical toll on families. Based on the high number of individuals affected, dementia is one of the leading cause of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population. The signs and symptoms linked to dementia can be understood in three stages:

Early stage: this stage is often overlooked, because the onset is gradual. Common symptoms include:

forgetfulness

losing track of the time

becoming lost in familiar places.

Middle stage: by this stage, the signs and symptoms become clearer and more restricting. These include:

becoming forgetful of recent events and people’s names

becoming lost at home, wandering

difficulty with communication and repeated questioning

needing help with personal care

Late stage: this stage of dementia is one of near total dependence and inactivity. Symptoms include:

becoming unaware of the time and place

having difficulty recognizing relatives and friends

having an increasing need for assisted self-care

having difficulty walking

AARP(American Association of Retired Persons) has long been committed to raising awareness of dementia related illness and educating people age 50 and older on how to maintain brain health. There is no treatment currently available to cure dementia or to alter its progressive course. Numerous new treatments are being investigated in various stages of clinical trials. However, much can be offered to support and improve the lives of people with dementia and their care givers and families. The principal goals for dementia care are:

  • early diagnosis in order to promote early and optimal management
  • optimizing physical health, cognition, activity and well-being
  • detecting and treating challenging behavioral and psychological symptoms
  • providing information and long-term support to care givers and the family

Researchers have shown that aromatherapy may be effective in helping people with dementia to relax, to improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and cognition in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Essential Oil Help to Relieve Ankle Pain

Do you know…………. Ankle injuries can affect people of all ages. They are frequently caused by repetitive overuse, weakness and instability in the ankle, twisting, poor posture during exercising – walking – running, and falling or diseases such as arthritis, plantar fasciitis or nerve damages in the feet and the surrounding areas. Such an injury may lead to inflammation, redness surrounding the injury, ankle and heel pain with inconvenience in walking. Minor injuries can be treated with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method at home for a sprained

ankle or achy knee, or wrist after playing sports for next 24-72 hours to speed up healing. It’s common in the United States for individuals suffering from minor sickness and pain to use over the counter medicines to treat various ailments. If the pain or swelling gets worse or doesn’t go away, consult a doctor.

Ankle sprains are the result of overstretching ligaments, which connect bones in an ankle joint. That is when we get our ankle twisted during a fall or playing a sport, connective tissues - tendons and ligaments, get stretched past their normal lengths, and sustain micro tears, which is damage to the cells in the tissues, there is often blood leaking from damaged capillaries into intracellular space that cause additional swelling, bruising, pain. As a result, there is a loss of blood flow to surrounding cells and blockage of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products moving in and out of those cells, which leads to cellular damage beyond the original injury.

Try managing pain using Essential Oils, provided by nature, without added chemical content. Essential oils have the ability to penetrate cells quickly, providing oxygen and improving circulation to inflamed joints. There are a number of essential oils that can be used to relieve the pain, muscle tenderness, as well as to reduce the inflammation while assisting the body in its healing process due to their anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and circulatory stimulating properties:

Birch, Frankincense, Lavender, German Chamomile, Cypress, Peppermint, Clove Bud, Helichrysum, Black Pepper, Ginger, Birch, Wintergreen

Recipe for Ankle-Muscle Pain Rub

1/4 Cup Shea Butter or Aloe Vera gel

1/4 Cup Coconut oil

15 drops Turmeric essential oil

20 drops Peppermint essential oil

10 drops Black Pepper essential oil

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

10 drops Lavender essential oil

7 drops Geranium essential oil

Warm about 2 inches of water in a saucepan medium heat. In a glass measuring cup combine shea butter (if using Aloe gel, don’t have to melt it) and coconut oil, place in the warm water and allow all to melt. Remove from sauce pan and turn off heat, pour the mixture in a 4-6oz glass jar and allow to cool to room temperature. Add essential oils and stir well to combine all ingredients, cover, label, rub on affected area 2-3 times daily or as needed.

Happy Hormones and Aromatherapy

Do you know………….. Hormones play a huge role in the way that our body reacts and responds to life, and even the slightest imbalance causes unpleasant symptoms. Today, I will talk about the Happy Hormones. Many of you have probably already noticed the feeling of pure satisfaction after a workout or helping others in need or the growing confidence in your own capabilities after completion of a project. This is the result of biochemical processes and the release of so-called Happiness Hormones in our body. The most popular ones are Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphin (D.O.S.E. of happiness).

Technically, some of these are neurotransmitters (A chemical that is released from a nerve cell which transmits an impulse from a nerve cell to another nerve, muscle, organ, or other tissue) and not hormones (A chemical that is secreted by specialized glands called endocrine glands into the bloodstream), but for our topic here, we will call them Hormones.

Dopamine: is a neurotransmitter and is produced in three different areas of the brain including hypothalamus. These three areas of the brain affect different bodily functions, such as movement, memory, sleep, mood, pleasurable reward and to take action to move toward them, emotional responses, behavior and cognition. Dopamine is the main reason why you feel good while exercising. Why you are able to finish your workout even if your body and your mind both want to give up. Also, when you are appreciated for your work or at home, Dopamine is released that makes you feel accomplished and happy. Similarly, when you buy a new car or a house, or new home-computer gadgets, or any type of shopping, your happiness is because of Dopamine. The presence of a certain kind of dopamine receptor is also associated with sensation seeking people, commonly known as “risk takers.”

Oxytocin: is a naturally occurring hormone that is made in the hypothalamus and is stored and released by the posterior pituitary gland in the brain. Oxytocin is the “love” hormone released upon physical contact, during an orgasm and childbirth, lactation, hugging others and even shaking hands, and effects testosterone production. Oxytocin provides feelings of love and trust, which is why relationships boost our happiness.

Serotonin: is a chemical that is produced in brain, though 90% of serotonin supply is found in the digestive tract and in blood platelets. It is sometimes called the “happy chemical”, because it contributes to happiness, boosts our mood, makes us more agreeable and sociable, regulates appetite and digestion, memory, sexual desire and has a wide variety of functions in the human body. As the precursor for melatonin, it helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycles and the internal clock. It’s good to choose positive thoughts and remember happy events, expose to sunlight and walk in the nature, consume carbohydrate with tryptophan (milk, corn), that our body converts to serotonin.

Endorhins: They are manufactured in brain, spinal cord, and many other parts of our body. Endorphins are the body’s very own natural analgesics, or painkillers. They are released during times of stress and pain, trigger a positive feeling in the body during strenuous exercise, and puts a person in a good mood. Endorphins function in the brain similarly to morphine. This is a feeling of everlasting power, joy, described as euphoric and among runners, this state is also known as the “runner’s high”. It can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life, doing rigorous exercise with guidance and consuming spicy food.

In any case, it’s nice to know that we are physically geared towards happiness through the production of “happy hormones”. Happiness is not only in our minds, it is also in our bodies and lifestyle factors affect them.

Utilizing Essential Oils: Maintenance of the body-mind-soul, is the key to reach balance in life utilizing Essential Oils (Aromatherapy) tool on a consistent basis, ensures that we will be providing our body with natural solutions for hormonal balance. The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect our emotional state as our sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic system of the brain that activates the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the hormone control center in the body that regulates the sex drive, energy levels, stress, and happiness. To reap the rewards of Aromatherapy, use Essential Oils proactively with patience. Apply Essential Oils topically(diluted) over the wrists, feet, back of the neck and ovaries or inhale directly, in combination with lifestyle modifications in diet and exercise. This will allow the body to heal itself and find its own equilibrium. Following Essential Oils are good for Hormonal Balance function:

Patchouli, Peppermint, Geranium, Ylang ylang, Rose, Sandalwood, Thyme, Lavender, Jasmine, Clary sage, Bergamot, Green myrtle

Hormonal Balance Synergy Blend:

8 drops Clary sage essential oil
4 drops Lavender essential oil

4 drops bergamot essential oil
2 drops geranium essential oil
2 drops ylang ylang essential oil
10 ml Almond oil

Place essential oils in a10 ml. glass rollerball bottle, fill to the top with almond oil, cover, mix, label. Roll the blend over ovaries and pulse points (neck, ankles, and wrists) 2-3 times/day or as needed.

At the end, it’s very simple, to stay happy; apply your essential oils regularly, exercise every day to get endorphins, accomplish goals to get dopamine, be nice to others and to yourself to get serotonin, and hug your family-friends-kids to get oxytocin.
