Aromatherapy Application for PTSD

Do you know……. Today, Monday, May 27th, we Americans across the country, will remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country, for our freedom, for our safety, so that we can sleep peacefully. We salute and applaud our Military Personnel. “Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, its honoring those who lost their lives. Veterans had the fortune of coming home. For us, that’s a reminder of when we come home we still have a responsibility to serve. It’s a continuation of service that honors our country and those who fell defending it.” -Pete Hegseth

On this Memorial Day, I thought of talking about PTSD. What is PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)? It is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people (of any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age) who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as; a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault. PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults and women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD. Military personnel are among the most at-risk populations for exposure to traumatic events and combat-related stress disorders.

It is natural to feel afraid and be in emotional disharmony during and after a traumatic experience. Re-experiencing symptoms, from the person’s own thoughts, feelings, anger, distressing dreams, objects, flashbacks, or situations, could trigger the past and may cause problems in a person’s everyday routine, relationships. Not everyone exposed to a traumatized event is diagnosed with PTSD. Most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger. Negative thoughts and feelings about oneself or others (e.g., “I am bad,” “No one can be trusted”), ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt or shame, less interest in activities previously enjoyed, feeling detached or estranged from other, being irritable and having angry outbursts, behaving recklessly or in a self-destructive way,  being easily startled, lack of sleep and concentration

There is need for comprehensive interventions based upon both Neuroscientific

               Aromatherapy for PTSD

information and new integrative care modalities. Individuals with PTSD are often  treated with psychotherapeutic drugs, but it should be handled in conjunction with other safe alternative healthcare approach like clinical Aromatherapy. Though, several research are being conducted to validate the effect of aroma on PTSD and emotional distress, we are familiar with the therapeutic properties of Essential Oils and their physiological effects on brain to heal the mind-body. Essential oils directly impact the brain’s Limbic system where Amygdala is located. This is the region of the brain that activates our fight and flight response at the time of danger and trauma. Special blends of essential oils as well as applying oils to specific points (acupoints) on the body help to calm the nervous system and to harmonize our Qi (energy or life force of the body) and Shen (cognitive and emotional life).

Here are the most widely used essential oils for PTSD:

Lavender, Bergamot, Mandarin, Orange,

Rose, Chamomile, Ylang ylang, Clary sage, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Geranium

 Calming Emotional Trauma Blend:

3 drops Rose or Geranium Essential Oil
2 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
2 drops sweet orange Essential Oil
15ml carrier oil (Almond or Grapeseed Oil)

Add essential oils to a dark 15ml glass euro vial, pour carrier oil, close the lid, mix, label. Apply on pulse points like, wrist, temple, back of neck, or inhale directly 2-3X daily or as needed.

Scientific Name Importance in Aromatherapy

Do you know…… Scientific system of nomenclature is a system of unique name, used by scientists to identify an organism and plant based on their common traits and their origin. It consists of Genus (a generic epithet ), followed by species (a specific epithet). Unlike common names, these scientific names are important, because they allow people, scientists, researchers throughout the world to communicate ambiguously about animals and plants and usually come from Latin or Greek. For example, the scientific name of, narrow leaf firethorn is Pyracantha (Greek for fire) angustifolia (Latin for narrow leaves).

Swedish botanist, Carl Linne (Linnaeus, 1707-1778), devised Binomial System (two name naming system) of precise identification of plants called Taxonomy, which is used internationally. The Binomial name consists of a Genus, which is always written first and capitalized and followed by a species which is in lower case and the entire name is italicized. Here are the levels of highest to lowest classification as follows:

Kingdom

Division

Class

Order

Suborder

Family

Genus

Species

Since, Essential Oils are derived from the plant kingdom, it’s important to identify them by their scientific names for their proper therapeutic properties. In Aromatherapy, generally Family, Genus, and Species is used, eg;

Lavender (true English or French Lavender) – Lavandula angustifolia

Variety (var), is used for subdivision of species for the variant of horticultural origin or importance, eg; Bitter orange

Aromatherapy for Health Maintenance

Do you know……Just the other day, someone sent this message on WhatsApp:

“Medicine is not Health Care, Medicine is Sick Care. Good food, Vigorous exercise, Great friends, Sound sleep, Mental stimulation—That’s Health Care.” Write Yourself a Prescription……Marc Middleton

I thought of sharing with you all because as a Clinical Aromatherapist, I too believe in Holistic approach to our health care. In this technologically driven modern world, we are forgetting to interact with our natural surrounding and not reaping the healing benefits which our ancestors did. We are damaging our own health by breaking the law of nature and by breaking our relationship with mother nature. Now, researchers are recognizing the healing and nurturing properties of combining the alternative health care modalities with conventio

nal allopathic medicine for our mind-body-soul healthy maintenance. As a result, natural medicine and prevention is gaining popularity in dealing with chronic disorders. Fortunately, our body is a self-maintaining, self-repairing, and self-healing machine, as long as we take good care of it.

Unlike in the Western tradition, in Chinese medicine, they consider the interdependence of physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of a patient. So, for the whole person to be healthy, the sum of its parts must be healthy. For the maintenance of optimum health, prevention is the best practice by following healthy diet, exercising, hygiene, proper rest, and resp

ecting our environment. Similarly, Ayurveda, which means in Sanskrit, ‘knowledge of life’, originated in India more than 5,000 years ago from the ancient Vedic culture and is often called the “Mother of All Healing”, places great emphasis on individual body’s physical constitution, emotional nature, spiritual outlook, and balance in one’s life.

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using Essential Oils, that are aromatic

, volatile compounds extracted from various parts of plants to improve physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Essential oils affect our physiology, emotions, and behavior by stimulating hormones and neurotransmitters and should be used correctly often by inhali

ng, or by diffusing, or by applying topically with proper dilution (refer to aromawellness.net). Aromatherapy can be used as an alternative, holistic treatment together with conventional medicine or with other complementary treatments like; massage, acupuncture, acupressure, crystal healing for the maintenance of our healthy body and alleviating certain conditions. Like:

Stress, anxiety

Chronic Pain

Easing Nausea

Soothing Sore Muscles

Trouble Sleeping

Pampering our Feet with Aromatherapy

Do you know…….Our feet is the most neglected part of our body, while they deserve lot of pampering. Because, our feet carry our weight (light or heavy) day after day without any vacation

except for the night time when most of us are in bed sleeping or if we are sick. We cram our feet into tight socks, gym shoes, and pinching high heels, or standing around chatting-working, or walking to class-work-to the car, or running to catch a train-bus, or exercising, etc., etc. Energetically the feet represent our connection with earth and rooting us to Mother Nature, the sense of being grounded.

There are 26 bones in each foot and there are over 7,000 nerve endings called reflexes that correspond to every organ and system within our body. By pressing on these reflex points, we can stimulate the nervous system and open energy pathways that may be blocked or congested.

That’s why when we walk bare feet on fine sand or soft grass, we get the mesmerizing euphoric feel.

We should not wait to take care of our feet only when it starts to hurt, rather give it a tender loving care (TLC) at regular interval with reflexology, footbath and foot massage with Essential oil, that can reduce pain, stress, dryness, and can have calming effect. Essential Oils are natural extracts of plants with amazing individual therapeutic properties and have been used since centuries to cure different ailments. Especially, people with diabetes can have more damaged nerve endings. Here is couple of my Essential Oil blends that you could make at home and enjoy the affordable spa like treatment.

Relaxing Sugar Pedi Scrub:

¼ cup fine white sugar

¼ cup brown sugar

½  cup olive oil(can use Almond Carrier Oil)

15 drs Lavender Essential Oil(for winter can use Cinnamon E. Oil)

15 drs Lemon Essential Oil

10 drs Peppermint Essential Oil

8 drs Geranium Essential Oil (can use Ylang ylang E. Oil)

5 dr Vit E

Mix sugar well in a glass bowl making sure no lumps present. Add essential oils in different places on sugar mixture and mix well. Add rest of the ingredients and mix well. Store in individual tin or glass containers or in a large glass jar and close the lid. Label.

The best way to take full advantage of the scrub is to have a footbath ready (heat up 2-3 pints of water, pour into a foot bowl or any large pan-tub-bucket that you could soak feet). First gently massage the scrub on your ankles and feet, then soak feet in the ready footbath till the water is warm or 10-15 minutes, gently wash off the residual scrub in the footbath water, and pat dry your feet with a towel. Or if you just want to soak the feet in warm footbath without massaging the foot scrub, add 1/4 cup of Epsom salt and some Essential Oil (may be 4 drops Lavender Essential Oil, 2 drops Lemon Essential Oil, 2 drops Tea tree Essential Oil) to give your achy-tired feet some relief, wash off any foot odour, and feel rejuvenated.

Sea Salt Advantage in Aromatherapy

Do you know…… Salt is arguably one of the world’s most important cooking ingredients. All salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), and it all comes from seawater or earth. We can use kosher salt, sea salt

Sea Salt Advantage in Aromatherapy

and table salt, based on our taste and choice. Sea salt, also called bay salt, solar salt, is salt that is produced by the evaporation of salt water bodies. Since ancient times, sea salt has been used for its therapeutic properties in healing injuries, wounds, as a seasoning in cooking, cosmetics, and for preserving food. Unlike refined salts, the preparation of sea salt usually includes very little processing. It is little darker, flakier or in crystal form, retains its moisture, minerals (vital minerals like; sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, bromide, chloride, iron, copper, fluoride, and zinc, among others), and therapeutic qualities that is easily utilized and absorbed by the human body. The climate and the geographical location of the region (The Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the North Sea are the main regions) also play a significant role in the quality and combination of minerals present in the sea salt.

Health Benefits of Sea Salt

Sea salt consists of a similar assortment of minerals and natural healing elements as those found on skin cells. This makes it a perfect natural ingredient to be used for therapeutic treatments combined with Essential Oils in Aromatherapy:

Aromatherapy and Prevention of Suicidal Thought

Do you know…………Suicidal thoughts are those that involve ending one’s own life, usually rooted in feelings of hopelessness, depression, anxiety, other mental illness, isolation, and abusing drugs or alcohol. This could also be triggered by a major life changing event. Sadly, this leaves behind families, friends, teachers, and therapists all wondering what could have possibly been done to prevent them?

This article is just for informational purpose. If you come across someone suffering from suicidal thoughts and depression, please listen to them compassionately and seek appropriate help immediately.

According to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. In 2017, 47,173 Americans committed suicide and 1,400,000 attempts were made. According to the Jason Foundation, more teenagers and young adults die from suicide each year than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease combined.

     Aromatherapy for Suicidal Thought

Unfortunately, we live in a different world now where life style, our food, our environment, and stress level has changed. If our body is not equipped to deal with it i.e. if our body is unable to filter those free radicals and millions – billions more floating in our vicinity, compared to the anti-oxidant we have in our body to combat them, we feel sick. This affect us emotionally, mentally as well and we develop a feeling of failure, depression, isolation, etc. Ultimately, in few instances, could turn into a suicidal thought too. Depression can affect the way people feel, think, react to the situation and can cause both physical and emotional symptoms, like:

anxiety

restlessness

sadness

difficulty concentrating

difficulty sleeping

feeling of failure, incapable to handle the situation

First step to prevention of suicidal thoughts is awareness and education by alerting family members/Parent to have family meeting with love and compassion, a therapist, teacher, or suicidal hotline (The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline available at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) is a free and confidential service available 24/7), consuming an anti-depression diet, supplementing to support cognitive health, exercise, and Aromatherapy with the use of Essential Oils. Essential Oils are natural plant extracts with different therapeutic properties and have been used since ancient times to cure different ailments. A sense of smell is one of the five senses and a powerful connector between people and the world around them. Aromas are highly emotive and everyone reacts to scents differently based on their past experiences, memory, and emotions. This, in turn, may provide some relief in mood disorders, such as depression. Essential oils that could be helpful are:

  1. Bergamot
  2. Lavender
  3. Roman Chamomile
  4. Ylang Ylang
  5. Sweet orange
  6. Grapefruit
  7. Neroli
  8. Frankincense
  9. Jasmine
  10. Sandalwood
